Rusty exhaust pipe

My stock exhaust pipe is looking really rusty...can I paint that sucker or would it be pointless cause of the heat?

yumcheetos Jan 16, 2006 05:01 PM

just go ahead and get a muffler and new pipes....chrome looks better than rust anyday... :biglaugh:

HighRollerII Jan 16, 2006 05:03 PM

get like a 300 grit sand paper to rough the rust off..you can get high heat paint if you want to..lowes sells it

yumcheetos Jan 16, 2006 05:11 PM

Hurray for the Evans......

Chrome isnt going to slove anything...go stainless if you dont want rust.
:approve:

HighRollerII Jan 16, 2006 05:26 PM

I got Stainless and to tell you the truth it looks like chrome once its washed and clean it looks just as good..shines and its metal..

if you do go with bigger tips and junk..remember the bigger and longer the tip the rasper it will sound..and with being a 3.0 i think you will need it

tideguyinva Jan 16, 2006 05:28 PM

what do you mean by rasper?

yumcheetos Jan 17, 2006 10:38 AM

Chrome...Stainless.....blahhh

I meant stainless just couldnt think straight....cause i was at work

When I got mine done...I liked the way it sounded (for a 4 banger)...but now I think i have holes or something in the muffler or pipes....cause it always makes a hissing sound when i drive...thats why you dont mud in a crappy truck... :biglaugh:

By Rasper...maybe he means deeper and more throaty....

that deeper tone to it..the more tip the deeper rumble it will sound

Back to the question*** Yeah I had the same problem, listen to Highroller. Some sandpaper and high heat spray paint did wonders. It takes all of 10 minutes and it made my rear end look 100% better than the rust spotted tailpipe.

EDIT: I think he meant raspier

lol yea..spelling isnt my strong subject

Ya the paint should last pretty long since the tailpipe dosent get nearly as hot as the muffler/cat forward section does.

l2en Jan 18, 2006 02:29 PM

Three months later and still looking good....

........or ten bucks and some extra sandpaper and high heat paint to play around with. =]

Upgrade if you've got the money. Frankly, I'm not interested in an exhaust sytem til mine falls off. No point, the Rangers don't have the best cab insulation. It's a compact pickup not a big block muscle car, no matter how much you spend on an exhaust it won't be worth the hp (in theory) in my book.

buzzair Jan 18, 2006 03:04 PM

Yes..10 bucks...I like, but bookmarked the link for future reference

Thanks guys, might give that a go this weekend if its warm

Tight Ranger Jan 19, 2006 05:42 AM

What color are you goona paint it?
I was thinking of doing mine, but I don't want the
color to stick out worse than the rust color thats
already there.

buzzair Jan 19, 2006 09:42 AM

Probably silver or something to make it look like it was before the rust. I guess it also depends what kind of high heat colour paint is available.

I'll post up the results when I do it

You could call Ms.Cleo.

I would save money until you can afford a new one.

DOES the Hillbank cat back work on 4x4's? If so sign me up for one.

There is benefits to it other than HP. My truck Immediatley had a significant increase in MPG with my Flowmasters and my dual outlet pipes. That coupled with my K&N intake have resulted in me getting anywhere from 18-21 MPG with My 4.0 With 4:10's. Not to mention the HP increas is significantly noticable. I was getting 14-16 before. Not only that it looks good and sounds good. The way mine is set up it actually rumbles low like a V8. I agree if you don't have the money the $10 fix is great, but if you do it will pay for itself in no time.

Yes, Bob has his installed. Mine is still sitting in the garage waiting for me to find the time to put it on

l2en Jan 19, 2006 08:29 PM

yeah hazzard i get between 15-18mpg ugh. but i've been trying to find a new intake like a k&n fipk for my snorkel idea. that's cool your truck runs better. i have a 4.0 too and talked to a friend of mine he bought a b.... i forget what it was for his 4.0 and he said his mpg went down. now that i think of it though he romps on it harder to hear the sound lol.
