Seats in bed
I have been thinking about getting a couple seats out of a ranger and bolting them down in the bed of my truck, I have a roll bar, and would hook up seat belts, does anyone know if this is legal?

its gonna depend largely on your area. also, think twice. your "roll bar" is not designed to protect in event of a REAL rollover. I wouldnt want to subject my passengers to that sort of chance ;)

A "roll bar" that is simply bolted to the body/bed does more for looks than it does actual protection. But regardless, you'll have to check your local state laws on whether it is legal or not. Chances are it if it is legal, the requirements will be pretty strict regarding how it is bolted down and the seatbelts.

as of right now, its just an idea that i had, and the only thing i could find as far as laws go in michigan is that you cant be in the bed of a truck going over 15 mph if you're under 18, nothing regarding seats/seatbelts/restraints, this all came about after two tracking last summer when we had two people riding in the cab and two in the bed, which is not only uncomfortable without seats, but illegal at the time because we were all under 18, so just one of those wacky ideas

ive thought of this but it was more along the lines of two low pro bench seats along the bed side so at car show ill have somewhere comfy to sit everyone seems to like to sit on the back of my truck cuz there legs dont hang they reach the ground

I wouldn't attach a belt bar to that "roll bar"/light mounting thing....unsafe imo.

For what it's worth here is the law in Michigan

(1) Except as provided in this section, an operator shall not permit a person less than 18 years of age to ride in the open bed of a pickup truck on a highway, road, or street in a city, village, or township at a speed greater than 15 miles per hour. (2) Subsection (1) does not apply to the operator of any of the following: (a) A motor vehicle operated as part of a parade pursuant to a permit issued by the governmental unit with jurisdiction over the highway or street. (b) A military motor vehicle. (c) An authorized emergency vehicle. (d) A motor vehicle controlled or operated by an employer or an employee of a farm operation, construction business, or similar enterprise during the course of work activities. (e) A motor vehicle used to transport a search and rescue team to and from the site of an emergency. (3) A person who violates this section is responsible for a civil infraction. |
How do you know that his roll bar isn't a "real" one. I always figured that a roll bar that is in the bed that bolts to the frame is a "real" roll bar. I would actually put a bench seat with some seat belts along with a "real" roll bar and then drive around with people in it without a doubt. Of course I wouldn't go on the highway with it and I wouldn't go ripping around off road with them in the back but regular driving I'd consider doing it.

We don't know, thats why we're mentioning it. If its mounted to the frame and its of decent quality construction, then it will definitely provide some protection... assuming you don't try and do acrobatics with your truck.

the subaru brat came with rear facing seats in the bed, along with seat belts. it was legal to use in all 50 states and canada. so, i can't see any harm in mounting seats in the bed of your truck and installing seat belts.

im not planning on driving people around on the highway, this would merely be a way of going off road with more people, and not hardcore off road, it would basically be like driving down dirt roads, i would have not intention of driving with people in the bed if there were to be any chance of flipping, as it isnt a true roll bar, its one that mounts to the bed, and i do know they arent meant for more than looks, where i go off road, there arent alot of hardcore trails, and my truck isnt equipped to handle those trails anyway, so i dont really have to worry about flipping

I dont know of one production "roll bar" that is bolted to the frame. If its bolted to the bed, well then you are trusting small gauge steel (not even taking into account the lack of trianglulation to prevent folding) to protect you from, at the minimum, a few thousand pounds of force....

it is a removable roll bar, it only bolts to the bed

if you do decide to do this, use the rear bench from a bronco or a k5. that way it can fold down (or mount it so it folds up) when not in use.
