If you sand it, prime it, shoot colour, and then clear it all with a rattle can it'll look good, just apply light colour coats along with light clear coats and you'll have a colour matched grille in no time. Of course a paint gun is much better, it's just the case of purchasing all the parts and items if you don't have an air compressor and paint gun. I've repainted parts with rattle cans and although they don't have the showroom shine and finish, they work, and look awesome.

You'll hear pros and cons with both applications. I also need a new grille surround on my 01 Edge. The piece under the driver side headlight broke last winter and I'll be in the same boat as you....to paint a black grille. LOL

Good luck and keep us posted with finished pics.

I would scuff it with Scotch Bright the finer ones and spray on DuPont Adhesion Promoter, then the color you want. If the finish color is a DuPont product then it is better.

Just my Opinion.
When I did mine, just painted it that is, I scuffed it getting all of the open areas and found it was more trouble than it was worth trying to get in the holes, so I sprayed the Adhesion Promoter as it was, then the Black Paint, DuPont Paint...
