I have 2 deep scratches about 3 inchs long on my tailgate near the top of it in the center right below the ford bed liner ends over the top of the tailgate (ill get pics later) How much would you guys think ford would want to fix it?? Just a ballpark. I had them paint some scratches on my front bumper a while ago and they charged like 200+ but i think that was because of the rounded edge that needing to be painted and the plastiv bottom of the bumper needed to be taken off too. Im hopeing this will be cheaper with it being a flat surface, hell i could remove the bed liner on the tailgate before i take it in to save some of the price on labor. Just wondering if it would be about the same or not. I will prolly take it in for an estimate here in a few days.

Don't know how much it will cost to repaint but what I did is to buy some 3M Stoneguard. It cost me about $85 for a 4 inch wide by 5 foot long piece. I placed it over the lip of my tailgate. With the decal spray it is super easy to apply. Just follow the directions to the letter.
It works great if you don't over abuse it. My aluminum ladder scratched it and caused it to peel in places. But I do not have one scratch in the paint.
Next time I load my ladder I will put a cloth down first.
Check the stuff out and it may work for you after you get the tailgate painted.

The ford bed liner actually wraps over the top of the tailgate so the top lip of it is protected, it just so happened that a part of the couch scratched the paint right where the bed liner was ended

I am thinking about just taping it off around them and just touching up the scratches for now and then in the summer having it painted professionally. I also have 3 minor scratches on my fenders which i already touched up for now.

 

Are they through the clear and base coats??

for how big those are id just get a color match paint pen and fill them in... wont be perfect but you wont notice them at a distance... ive fixed a few spots on my truck like that and you dont really notice unless you know theyre there and youre right up close

 

ahahahahahh this is funny .... i have about a 6 foot long one of those on my truck someone thought it would be funny to key it ... and then i have about 6 more about a foot long from trees ... lol those arint even worth fixing

 

Get some touch up paint... You should be able to take your time and touch them up pretty well. Just apply a small amount in the scratch, let it dry, if you do it right, it will take a while. You want to fill the scratch until it's slightly higher than the other paint, then wet sand it smooth with 2000 grit sand paper and then polish it out!! I had to do this on my passenger door.

 

I agree with the touch up paint. I have a small bottle of the Motorcraft touch-up paint for my truck and I always use it for stone chips, scratches, and nicks. Just take your time and make sure that the area is clean. Just fill it up and you can just see it up close. Everyone mostly uses their trucks a d/d's so it really isn't an issue.

Just remember, if you use your truck, it'll get scratched. Boo to trailer queens. LOL

 

Yea i know it is going to get scratches on it but my dad is a big freak about keeping it in pristeen condition and constanly checks it over for scratches and s***. I know s*** happens and all that, i mean it isnt that big of a deal. I have a thing of touch up paint and was planning on doing it well but am planning on getting all the little scratches touched up in the spring when have the time and the money. What would be better to use to touch it up though, taping off the scratches and doing it with touch up paint and a brush or would a paint pen be better?? I have both but dont know too much bout the pen.

Oh and that sux bout ur scratches on the side of ur truck and the ones from trees!!

 

Try both, see what works best for you. I don't have much luck with the pens and buy the really tiny brushes from a paint store. The brushes that come with touch up paint suck!!
