I have the Edge bed caps and I'm about to buy a truck tool box from a guy on CL.
Does anyone know if I can mount on top without cutting the caps like 'Lord of War'

 

If you can find long enough J-bolts, I don't see why you couldn't.

These are J-bolts, so you don't have to drill into the bed and through the caps...

The bigger, the better.

Use four of them and that will keep that box clamped in place. Might not be a bad idea to weld pads onto the hook end of the J-bolts so that pressure is evenly distributed, which will reduce/eliminate sheet metal damage from cranking the bolts tight.

Also consider spraying Plasti-dip on the bottom of the toolbox 'tabs' where it will rest on the rails. That will help as well.

 

Bought the toolbox. It's not a low profile so it might be high if it sit above the caps.

Yes I bought some things at Lowes or Home Depot that sort of clamped on the rail inside the bed and had a bolt that ran down to the clamps . think I paid about $25 for the set ...

 

You talking about the j bolts? The toolbox came with a pair or two they look short tho..

You'll probably want to cut the bed caps, since it's not a low profile. I originally had mine on top of the bed caps, but it just sat up to high and looked funny. If done right the toolbox and bed caps look really good when cut.

I would hate to cut them tho cause they're harder to come around by nowadays. But it does look better.

 

If its not a low profile that would be reaaaly high up on top of the caps. I've got a taller one and it sits half way up my back window without them! Good luck!

 

I ended up just cutting it. Looks good, except the caps come out flush to the side panels and the toolbox doesnt. I'm still happy with the end result, not bad for $100

 

I was going to suggest axing the gawdy humongous caps and get Bushwackers and put the box on top of them using J-bolts/J-hooks.


I see you've mounted it up....question: you know how the rails are wider at their widest than the box? Could you possibly just notch the rails so the box slides right in between the now trimmed rails? Hard to describe, but imagine when viewing from the side, the rail will be continuous front to back, but there'd be a box mounted to the sheet metal between the plastic rails. I know some way of mounting the front of the rails would have to be done, but still......my brains-a-workin'! lol.

Mounting the front of the rails would be tricky but I'm sure there's a way.

 

drill a hole in the side of the box and mount the cutout area to the box, would have been easier if they were not cut off completly.. you're just looking for supporting them so they don't get ripped off by the air flowing when driving...
Little bit of silicon or marine grade 5200 sealant and it would be waterproof again....

 

I'm an eh-hole, what can I say? lol. No one else has thought of doing something like I've suggested. They just hack it up and deal with an unfinished looking end result.

You could always take the chunks you chopped off and experiment with them. Practice to make 'em perfect and apply the theories learned to your soon-to-be-acquired second set of rails.

Top Tip: sharp boxcutter is wonderful on making clean, finished looking cuts to plastic.



Honestly, I have some ideas on securing the front, but she made be firm enough to not require any additional securing. It's been so long since I've worked on a set of those rails, that my ideas just need to be implemented to the parts in person. And box. If anything, I'm sure just one self tapper into the freshly opened up insides of the rails would secure it plenty to the bed. And I really doubt if left insecure, it wouldn't just fly away.
