They tend to grow over time, especially when it gets very cold or hot. It does depend on the type of chip too. I have a couple on mine that have not grown in the past six months. I am hoping they will become a long enough crack that I can call my insurance company for windshield replacement. The windshield is pitted pretty bad and I would like a new one.
If you get it sealed, that will usually keep it from developing a crack. Many insurance companies have no deductible if you have the sealing done by a professional.

Living where you are it could become a large crack.
Warming the truck in the morning before leaving and then have icy cold air hit the warm glass is a recipe for cracked glass.
Check with your insurance company to see if they would rather pay to have it repaired before it gets bad (cheaper for them), or just have it replaced.

My mom had one in her Dakota. One cold winter evening, we were driving home with the defrost on high. Bam! The chip turned into a long crack. There were a couple in my Ranger when I got it. Never cracked until one day i put a little too much pressure on it (while working on the engine with the hood off) and it cracked. The crack grew some, but hasn't grown anymore in well over a year.
On the passenger side, I would just get it filled. If it was right in your line of sight, then I would replace.

Hey,
I just got a new windshield for my ranger becuase I let a stone chip go too long.... well it was right on the edge she had no hope.
But... Check the internet for a Safelite? (sp) automotive glass place. If it is just a chip don't bother calling the insurance company and putting in a glass claim. Just pay out of pocket at a automotive glass place. They now have some special epoxy that they put in the little chip/spider crack and buff it down. You can not even tell there was anythign wrong with the windshield when they are done. Last time I had this done it was around 15 bucks. It depends on the size. If the crack is smaller than a dollar bill in length it is repairable now. If they want more than say 20-30 bucks make a glass claim.
Last glass claim I made they hiked up my insurance rate 150 dollars per 6 months... thanks Kemper. In the end I paid for my new back slider window...
