Hi, I have a 2005 Ranger XLT 4x4 4.0. I just finished a rebuild because the timing chains messed up. I replaced all of thr timing components including the pensioners. I also replaced all of the lash adjusters, oil pump, water pump, spark plugs, spark plug cables, camshaft position sensor. I have this terrible knock that sounds like it's coming from under the plenum. The engine idles well when cold and before it reaches operating temp. As soon as it reaches operating temp, it starts to stumble and shuts off like a light switch. I've been told that I possibly could have a vacuum leak somewhere. Anyone have a diagram and information on where each line goes?

Goooood morning everyone! I'm a new owner of a 97 Ranger with the 4.0 OVH and 187k miles I've been doing a lot of reading and I'm debating about having the timing chain assembly replaced, mainly because of the tensioner. I'm aware that the SOHC tensioners are prone to failure moreso than the tensioner inside the OVH.

At 187k, should I get it replaced? (Money isn't that big of a problem and I want to ensure the engine is maintained).

Our electric Coop here in interior Alaska has an annual meeting and to encourage good attendance they give away worthwhile prizes. The best prize this year was a 2005 Ford Ranger 4wd 4.0 engine with 77,000 miles on it. They just retired it from their fleet of vehicles and appears to have been well maintained. Looks and feels like it has been well taken care of.

This is my very first Ford vehicle. Back about 1972 my dad bought a brand new Ford Courier and later on another Courier from about 1978. My mom had the misfortune of getting a brand new Ford Pinto from the mid 70s. The Couriers seemed like good little trucks.

So I've been researching my new truck. Sounds like one weakness is the automatic transmission. I heard from one source rear gear goes out. Any suggestions on getting the most out of the transmission?

The other weakness apparently is the timing chain Tensioners? From what I understand one can avoid timing chain failure if the Tensioners are periodically replaced before one starts to notice a rattle? With only 77,000 miles on the truck I'm going to assume they have never been replaced. How often do people recommend replacing them? Here in interior Alaska our winters can be severely cold at times. Our last winter was the coldest on record. Perhaps starting a 4.0 at -20 or -30 fahrenheit might shorten the Tensioners life? In that case I can keep it in my heated garage at night.

I'm looking forward to learning from people on this forum on how to promote this unexpected vehicle's longevity.

Hey Everybody
I am picking up a 2007 4x4 King cab Ranger tomorrow am. It has a 4.0 SOHV (I believe) and the driver's side timing chain has pooped the bed...cracked valve cover.
I am able to remove the engine if needed and do what has to be done but my question is this...
Evidently this is an "interference engine" and from what I am reading there may be a possibility that the pistons may have been damaged on that side when the chain went (or whatever happened) and I will have to do a leak down test to determine that. IF the leak down test shows no piston damage can the chain on that side be replaced and engine retimed? I will plan on pulling the front of the engine off and removing the valve cover for inspection and will proceed from there.
I have never heard of an interference engine so I would like to get some input. The truck is in excellent condition and will be worth an engine replacement if necessary, but I would love to avoid that if possible.
Thanks for any help I can get with this!

So I have a 99 ranger 4.0 xlt automatic and it was a rollover truck that I had swapped the cab on and put a wooden flatbed. The cab was a junkyard cab in good shape and the truck ran fine. It started to slowly develop hard starts where it stumbles really hard and you have to barely play with the gas to get it to idle past 600 rpm but when it "comes to life" it's idles fine runs perfectly and has no issues. When I got the truck on the road it started to bog under load always consistently about 2 minutes into my drive then I got to repeat the trying to get it to stop stumbling but after that I pull back onto the road and it runs perfectly the rest of the way. Didn't touch any of the factory harness, double triple, quadruple checked for loose or missed connectors and it has a new IAC, MAF, TPS, fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter, and probably a few more parts I'm not able to think of right now these are not remanned or cleaned but NEW. All vacuum lines are hooked up and for sure I sprayed and sprayed starting fluid all around the lines and intake manifold makes for sure there's no vacuum leaks and I have a good 65psi to the fuel rail with no bleeding off. Help would be well appreciated I am usually very good with diagnosis but this one has me stumped. Have replaced most of what I could guess would cause these symptoms but have been wrong so far and it's getting expensive so any ideas or input or directions to look would be highly appreciated, thank you.
EDIT: so I found my issue, the truck ran fine before the cab swap. What I didn't take into account was the new cab came off a 3.0 and the frame I put it on has a 4.0. So the PCM wasn't switched and I ran it like that so the computer was looking for a whole different motor. This caused random rich/lean conditions but no serious codes and it ran terrible. This caused symptoms similar to all the sensors I replaced and mimicked them but none ever fixed the problem. So for future reference if anyone swaps cab and has these issues swap the pcm it's the problem. You will have to have 2 same year keys and the program to erase and reprogram the keys or the anti theft will not recognize the pcm.

Fresh rebuild on an 04 SOHC 4.0L and it blew the temp sender out of the thermostat housing and I drove it for a couple miles before pulling over. When I tried adding back water it sizzled each time I poured a little in. I’ve put a couple hundred more miles on it now and it runs great but there are bubbles coming into the overflow after it warms up and when I try to burp the system it surges coolant out the top every few seconds till 1/2 gallon+ is gone. I probably cracked the block running it dry then quenching it didn’t I. There’s no water in the oil or exhaust yet but the overflow smells like gas a little. Is there any hope?
