so i got a little warn m5000 from a buddy for free so i decided to make a mount for it. i plan on making a new bumper but i want to wait till i do my body lift so i dont have to mess with it again. all in all i have like 30 bucks into it. i had my friend weld it with his big miller cause my little 110v welder wont bun into the 1/4 inch plate enough. here is some updated pics of my truck to. i got these 32/13/15 bfg muds on 15x10 crager street locks for free. i am going to paint the wheels back soon. and here is a pic of my buddys 05 4 cylinder 2wd ranger. it has like 70,000 miles on it and he got it for 1000. it is beat up on the out side quite a bit tho. he built the bumper and headache rack and put the fenders on it. any way here is the pics.











it also is a skid plate for the vournable rad and ac condenser. that is why it is so long.

how do u guys think those 4 bolts on each side will hold up? it is the 2 for the sway bar and the 2 for the stock plastic wanna be skid....think they will hold up to being winched on?

 

I cant say anything about the stock plastic skid thing because i dont know what you are talking about, but the sway bar holes...no. You need to use a nut on the back of the bolt, the threads cut into the mild steel of the frame are not strong at all. You will strip the threads just trying to get the bolts tight enough, plus you should use larger bolts than the small ones used for the sway bar. You could just drill out those holes to 1/2" and stick a nut on the back side (if you can get one there) if you are set on your design.

 

Trucks look good. I probally wouldn't have bolted it there!

 

idk if the newer trucks are different..but my sway bar bolts are pretty big. they are at least as big as the bolts that you use to bolt the winch doen. (using the nuts that fit into the mounting spots on the winch.) and if i look down inside my frame the sway bar holes have nust on them. the skid ones dont so i would have to put nuts in there but the sway bar holes have nuts welded inside the frame..

 

Looks good. But I would definitely drill those out to use a bigger bolt with a nut.

 

well i got the holes for the winch drilled and the mounts for the fair lead welded up today after work. here are some pics of it mounted. i have to pull it off again tomorrow to paint it. i also drilled 2 big holes towards the front of the truck where a nut and a bolt will go through and then the 2 sway bar holes on each side...which do have nuts welded on them...

well i got it painted and the holes in my frame drilled out...going to have it on later today...waiting on the paint to dry...

 

well got it all mounted and the box mounted. it took me awile to find a spot for the box. i hope i dont block too much air now and start over heating....we'll see...if i do ill have to move it. any way got everything hooked up except the ground wire from the control box to the winch....i forgot to hook it up before i bolted the winch plate up and eveything and i cant get to it as it is...so i gotta pull it one more time. then i should finally be good to put the bumper on...any way more pics...

 

probly look alright once the bumper is back on.

 

NICE setup. too bad my crossmember is located right where your winch mount is, otherwise id mount mine in the exact same fashion.

also, if you were to wrap the strip that you bolted on the frame up to the SIDE of the frame, that might give you a lil more strenght maybe?


on another note.....how do you like that welder?! i just ordered a miller 212 for myself today!

 

ya i was thinking about welding another piece of plate on the side and putting a couple bolts through the frame horazontally like that...but we will see how it holds up like this before i add any more weight...but ya when i build my front bumper i plan on cutting out the stock cross member and moving it about 3-4 inches higher...but for now its fine...its only as low as the radiator..and now that is protected too...and ya my buddies miller 212 if fing sick...it welds so nice compared to my century 110v little guy.

wow nice i really like the desing and idea.. makes me want to make a new bumper adn hide the winch like yours and just go with a tbe bumper to go with the rollcage :S

haha..ya i like it so far..still not sure if i want to buld a tube bumper or one similar to INTERCEPTOR's old one.....but for now i want to get a stock valence because i think it would really clean it up...my old one is history...

 

I knoe its been a while, butr did you ever gwet around to making a tube bumper? Im thinking about cpoying your design, its about the best ive seen. If you dont mind me asking, what did you pay for the 1/4" plate?

 

Those four bolts will hold up just fine as long as you used the strongest hardware you could find. Grade 8 will suffice. Although that little 5000lb winch is gonna be weak and possibly dangerous when you start overloading it.
