Bumper, Rear, Steppie - Custom 4x4 Fab

Steppie Rear Bumper Project - Custom 4x4 Fab
I went for a while without a rear bumper, traded for one thanks to Pedro and now I have found someone to make a rear bumper, a heavy duty rear bumper that will not only protect the rear of the truck but the sides of the bed too.

I started it all when I replaced my styleside bed with a stepside bed. I had the original bumper that was too wide for a stepside, sold it and decide an aftermarket bumper was the only way to go, something rugged and well built.
The hunt was almost for nothing, I found a few companies/people but could never get anything going, either it was too much work or they needed the truck or all they wanted way too much money.

As some know I have a Custom 4x4 Fab (C4x4) front winch bumper, a great bumper, a good design, good manufacturing, good quality and not a flimsy thing that will crumple at first sign of stress. I wondered if C4x4 would make a rear bumper similar to the front one not only in quality but also in looks and I wanted some of my own ideas added in too.
Mike at C4x4 is and was very easy to talk too when I purchased my front bumper, got the bumper to me in short order and as I said before, one of the better bumpers I have seem, especially for the Ranger. I called him about the rear bumper and he wasn’t interested, a lot of front work, no guarantee on sales. As luck would have it, he decided to attempt what no one else would a rear bumper for the Ranger Stepside.

We talked and he asked for my information about what I wanted in a bumper and I sent him my ideas for what it should look like. Mike added in his own touches and designed a bumper that not only fits a Ranger Stepside but wraps around the sides some to protect the sides of the plastic bed.

First are picture of the Front Winch Bumper that you have seen in a number of photos, not from me but others that have these bumper. As you will see, good quality, a good HD Structure.

Here are the prototype Stepside Rear Bumper Picture, not for everyone but for a Steppie Owner a GOD sent:

The Top and Face are formed

The matching of the templet and the formed top/face

Side View showing the bumper profile and the bottom lip.

The Plate Mounting Location, it is shallower than other Step Bumper, there is no Trailer Hitch so there is no need for a large indent.

Full Face View showing wide spacing of backup lights for better light spread, Clevis Mount Locations, side ends are not installed.

Close up of Backup Light and Clevis, the light will have ╝” Rd Bars over the light for protection.

Just to keep it straight, if someone missed this, this bumper is being made by Custom 4x4 Fabrication of OK not me and anything other than info here in the posting will need to come from C4x4, that includes pricing which I am sure is not set yet.
Feel free to call, ask for Mike or wait until my Bumper is completed and I will post additional picture.

The image of the bumper with the cardboard on top.
The ends will wrap around the the sides of the bed.
There is a lip in the center of the bumper, that fits between the sides, it also reinforces the top and allow a mounting location for a red LED Strip Brake Light.

Once they get it made it would be pretty easy to modify the design for a styleside bed it seems like. good job getting someone to look into making it.

random front bumper question for you, do you have to cut the frame horns up front to get the bumper to fit?

Mike at C4x4 does great work.
It maybe a little wider than most people will want but people can ask about modifying.

Exactly, it can be changed, not sure if C4x4 will do that but doesnĺt hurt to ask him.

There is no one out there that makes a rear plate bumper for a steppie.
I have been looking for a while now without success and then Mike came through.

Not with C4x4 Bumpers, they are bolt on.
There are a number of trucks on this site that have the C4x4 front bumper, search them out and take a look, they look great on the Ranger.

You would have to contact C4x4 and ask Mike.

Almost there... the parts that require bending are done and assembly started.

Maybe a couple of weeks.

Picture of the bumper as soon as it arrives.

first shots of the new rear bumper before cleaning.

Mike at C4x4 does great work at a good price.

Since this is the only company that makes a rear plate bumper for Rangers and if you are interested in getting a HD rear bumper give Mike a call.

Bumper is on its way.
Should be here early next week.

I will be asking him about a skid plate for the front bumper and sliders for the short bed steppie.
Also, since this is the only maker of an HD Plate Rear Bumper for a Steppie Ranger, IT IS AWESOME !

I have been working on finding a supplier for a rear steppie bumper for some time and it is now on its way to Papa.

Actually me too but I will have to ride it no matter what.

I think with the front bumper too it will balance out.

Next week we will all see.

Thanks for all of the comments.

Yeah, I'm interested to see how it looks on the truck with how straight everything appears to be...without any bottom 'angles' or anything like the majority of rear 'offroad' style bumpers seem to have.

Post a bunch of pictures - Like how it mounts and everything!

Also, whats the plan for the finish?

Powdercoated, or Line-x'ed perhaps?

Up in the air still on that…

Powder Coating is nice but I have seen so much of it rust from the inside out, not sure if I want that.
Line-X or a fine grained bed liner might be a consideration, or maybe even the Rock Guard Paint that is applied to the lower part of a vehicle’s body.

If I do Line-X I am thinking maybe do the side of the vehicle too.

What is everyone’s opinion ? (I know a can of worms)

i did the duplicolor bed liner on the top rails of my truck bed and i love the way it came out. there are different ways it can be applied for texture differences. over all it is super easy to apply and it looks great. best of all it seems to hold up pretty good. been on my tuck almost a year with crap being dragged over the sides all the time and not showing any signs of wear or gouging

Thanks on that, I am still thinking Line-X, I like the look of it and they will warranty the job.

The bumper should be here today, it is out for delivery on the Tracking Matrix.

I need to call the drop point and see when the truck gets there.

I wonder how the bumpers will look in E-4 RED… LOL ?
