Custom Front crossmember

I have been thinking this out for a while, and now am ready to take this on....

I drive a 2wd xlt, so I don't have a front crossmember. I need a tow/pull point up front. I know a front reciever would be better, but lets forget about that for now....I just don't want to go there.

Here is my plan....get some square stock welded in where a crossmember would normally be on a 4x4 and attach some heavy duty tow hooks to it. I got under my truck, took measurements and all. I see no concerns of it actually fitting in there and serving its purpose.

Just wanted anybody's opinions on this.

Any suggestions on what size of square stock to use for the crossmember?

Any other concerns I should consider?

I took my crossmember out years ago (custom bumper) but needed it back. So...

Hit the JY, got a hitch from an old van, cut it down, and welded between the two frame rails.

I know you said don't go there, but a front receiver costs about $100 and its waaaaaaaayyyyy stronger than tow hooks.

I'm in Canada though. Even JY's sell rusted out hitches for $100+, add welding and cutting the hitch to that cause I don't weld, well, I'm mlooking at $150+.

I got a guy who could do the front crossmember for under $50 with materials. For the amount it would be used, I'll save the $100 and put it towards something else, like a hitch for my rear :)

Just wondering if 2"x4" square stock is enough, or should I go 4"x4"

What wall thickness? I would go at least .25". BTW, I got that receiver for 30 bucks, 100 is crazy!

Look. All you need to do is go to Advance Auto Parts and pay the 20 bucks for 2 10,000 lbs tow hooks, and then tap and drill the holes on the frame rails in the front of the truck, just behind the bumper. This is not a hard task. It took me less than an hour to install both of mine, and that is the STRONGEST tow point you can make!

Damn Bro, that truck is lookin tight! Love the Paint Job! J/C, what tires are those, make and size? They don't look like 35x12.50 MTZ's. And how are those 4.88's workin for you? What MPG did you go from (with the 4.10's) when you installed the 4.88's? And what is your twin shifters there?
