Fabing new bumpers
 

Well i have been in the shop doing som fab work and im set on doing a new rear bumper and maybe a front bumper....now the thing is i came up with a sick design for my rear bumper, every one loves it....well i was telling my dad about it today and he came up with an idea to either hide a small tank behind the bumper or make one of the tubes on the bumper into an air tank so if im out in the woods i have air to fill a tire if something ever happens, or have air to work an air tool to fix something....i want to know what you guys think of this idea...

thats perty creative and a great use of space.. if you think you can, i say hell yea

The only problem I see is if you get into an accident...just me being a worry ward I guess.

I'm always worried about the what if's.

I prefer in the bed or under the truck...under the truck you can at least build a skid plate or something.

well on the one design i came up with for a bumper i put a way where a tank can mount in the bumper and be removed just as easy....soo i guess im going to have to flip a coin....oh and for the what if's....im not going to have any air pressure in it in less im going out in the woods....i wouldnt drive around with the tank haveing air in it....plus the steele im usaeing is think enough that if hit it wouldnt crack open the only spot it could open is if i have a week weld some where....

If someone rearended you and you had 150psi in the tank it would be kinda dangerous, but like you said you wouldn't be driving around with the tank full.

I think that would be a very good idea!

The only problem is that without an air pump, the tank supply wouldn't last very long. I can hardly get a tire off with an impact gun without my 35 gallon tank falling below the pump set-point. You might be able to inflate 4 tires from trail pressure to road pressure once, but not more than that. I've seen this done before, and people usually have an ARB pump or something to maintain pressure.

As far as having 150psi in a bumper? I don't think that's a big deal as long as your using thicker steel (like you would for a bumper). I've had a compressor tank break from rust with 150psi in it, and it just squeals loudly and mushrooms the tank slightly at the opening. 150psi shouldn't be enough to shrapnel (sp) a bumper in any type of collision if it won't do it to an old rusty compressor tank.

I would say that maybing putting CO2 in the bumper would be better, you could fill a lot of tires with that, but that could explode in a collision... 1600psi...

that sounds like a good idea.
just make sure that its not the lowest point of the truck in the back, or make a guard. If you were to bottom out while in the woods, you want it protected. I have smacked my trailer hitch on the ground so many times.
I would say as long as its empty, you would be fine running it all the time. If there is no pressure, and it gets it, it will just bend like any other metal. seems like a sweet idea.
