Going to start the bumper fabrication soon
Im going to go with something like this one, with some minor modifications
A few questions to thoes of you who have made your own bumper.
did you just use mild steel? what size tubing did you use? and how did you bend the tubing? If you have your own bender, can you post pics/specs/model numbers?
Thanks!

tube benders are hella expensive... 300 for a cheap one and about 250 each for the dies (1.5")..

pipe benders are cheap (~80) but they arn't made for tube and will kink it

mild steel will be fine. i built mine from chromoly cause thats what i have the most access to. i used 1.625x.095 for my main tube and 1.375x.095 for my skid plate runners and light hoop. if i was using mild steel, i would probly stick with .120 wall. hydraulic bender, only way to go if you have access to one.
my instructor used to say, "pipe is only used for two things; smoking and ****"

I have some fabbing experiance, but not much, my dad is pretty good at welding, so i know he will be giving me pointers along the way.
I honestly dont care if I waste alot of money the first time around, I dont know how im going to learn it if I dont, the 2nd time i custom fab a bumper (or anything else for that matter) it will get progressivly less expensive, and hopefully some day to the point where I can do it on the side and make a little money off it.
Thanks for the info guys, i appreciate it all

as for the pipe, that is very untrue. many wheelers use schedule 40 pipe for stuff like that. the only difference is the way its measured. pipe is measured using inside diameter and tube is outside diameter. schedule 40 is pretty cheap for the strength it gives, its just trouble sometimes getting the right die to bend it with...
