I want to build a skid plate for my 08, i have an idea of what i want to do, my main question, is what thickness material should i use for the plate? im going to attach it to my safari bar and part of the frame that comes down by the front wheels. And it is going to be removable.

 

Atleast an 1/8"

3/16" is what i would do

 

I did mine mostly for looks, so if you want it to function 100% I'd listen to beard.

 

diamond plate should be strong so nothing wrong with 1/8" either as long as it is supported well.

 

1/4" 6061 Al.....if you REALLY need it to work well!

Mine was 1/4" mild steel.. and NOTHING was gonna penetrate it..

Casey (camodown) has his front and t-case skid made out of 3/16" and that would be plenty...


I'll be building my front one out of 1/4" again just because its me.. and i tend to be rough..

and camdown's is sick......one of those out of 1/4" would be sick

 

 

nothing is going to get through 3/16" plate.

Either one of my skid plates hold the weight of the truck.

 

Alright I need someone with skills to make me up one of those thick ones!

 

you don't really need mad skills to make a few measurements and cut the pieces.. being able to weld doesn't hurt though lol

make one outa of cardboard and go from there, his hung a lot lower because of the tranny cooler lines...? atleast i think thats what they are.

ya im kinda curious if the skid plate was put on before or after the body lift was done, because my trans cooler lines hang down pretty far too.....ya....

which would force the skid kinda farther down ... which i dont wwant

 

both of ours were done after the body lift.

however!

you can do the body lift and take the fan shroud off then not lower the radiator like your supposed to... thats how mine is done

 

I would say 1/4. That's what I did with my skid plate.

nope sorry. Just went at it and went from there. I was going to reroute the tranny cooler lines so I could tuck the skid plate up closer but didn't get around to it.

and at the moment it is off, because I'm going to redo it. damn that is a lot of battle scars haha

 

i need to rebuild my t-case skid the factory one just gets bent to hell... and connect it to the gas tank skid, i dented the cross member that holds it up which means i almost bought myself a new gas tank..

 

ya....i hate the factory skid on the gas tank.....it has conflict issues with my driveshaft at timmes......alkfjs
