No I didn't do them myself (maybe in like 10 years, I can only hope to be that good).

Want to know what good TIG welding looks like? Someone posted these over on OFN (Offroad Fabrication Net) and too put it mildly, I was just a little impressed. Haha.... I decided I share the pictures with you gents over here.

It just crazy. The joints don't even seem to be welded. It's like they were meant to be this star of tube all molded together.

Exactly what I was thinking. You'd have to have a machine specifically for prepping tube to do it like that. No way you used an angle grinder for all that.

Maybe like some weird belt sander or something.

The thread that details the build of those trophy trucks should have the details there. I think they just use scotch-brite pads or brillo pads to clean the areas. Those tubes are all laser-cut before they are welded... awesome work for sure. I remember reading about those from the shop's master fabricator... some SERIOUS planning goes into those things!

all metal has a top layer..its called 'scale' you can MIG right over it..because MIG is just a "dirty" weld

when it comes to TIG its clean and it will pick up dirt, grease, grim -- etc -- so you prep where you are going to weld to knock off the scale to get a cleaner weld..

like kyle said scotch-brite or even sandpaper anything to take off that top layer...

ill have to take some pics around my work..we do nothing in that field but i am welding probably 15-20 hours out of a 40 hour week.. i can run a pretty good bead..wish i could get in somewhere that did that stuff..

Well, MIG isn't "dirty" -- but the wire has deoxidizers in it that TIG rods may not have. That accounts for the need for cleanliness really.

The composition of the MIG wire allows the welding in dirtier environments -- but you're going to get a much better weld with TIG if you know what you're doing.

Flux core is "dirty" to some extent because of the flux I suppose -- but that's not real MIG if you want to get technical, lol.

yeah a mig/gas combo with non-flux is 10x better. makes a huge difference in how clean the welds are.

but yes Tig is its own breed

psh... if I could have just HALF of one of those machined drilled-and-tapped tables... THAT'S how you get stuff done right!

Welds are fantastic! I'm gonna start working on a gocart frame soon. I'll be sure to post some pics of my TIG work. Nowhere near that good though.

They prolly prepped those tubes by sand or glass bead blasting.

good tube work but you cant really see the welds up close, so how are you able to judge them

Im sure they are fantastic I am just saying.

Also, my favorite tube prep process is a benchtop belt sander and actually its one of my favorite tools in teh shop!

Yes, that is The Herbst Brothers.......

Here is a link to the entire build, it is worth the 3 hours it takes to look through. I like to check it out now and then and I make my main fabricator check it out whenever he is feeling cocky about his work. There is Always someone better and this is the guy, he's even pretty modest about his work.

http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31417

He makes the rest of us feel a little insignificant.......

He goes through the entire build of three TT's made for the brothers until they ceased operations a couple of months ago.

BTW, you don't need to judge his work, his work is what we all dream ours might be like someday and I have been welding 30+ years......I am not there yet........
