well i finally started building my front bumper. going for a plate bumper

photoshop not opening for me so ill upload a pic later of what i have in mind and what i have done..

this is gona be a slow build as i cant work inside the garage and the weather sucks and doesent stop raining... so ill work on it as a have time

but i needed to ask a question is 1/4 plate good for the winch mount? or should i try and find 3/8... or i could reinforce it add some extra suports or something or im fine with the 1/4... (btw its for a 8000lbs winch)

its alsmo my first real attempt to build somethig. only have done the roof box i have.. but those welds are not as important as the ones hlding the winch.. so any imput sugestions would come handy.

the welder i got is a truper arc welder :)

i hope to get some pics tomarrow after i get some progress going

finally got photobucket to work.

1/4" plate is fine for the base for the winch

as for the plate for the rest of the bumper body, i would suggest 3/16" it's more than strong enough and also to help with the weight

oh ok thanks john.. i was a lil scared on that.... its cause all i got is 1/4 plate i got from a construction near.... lol.... and a unch of scrap pieces....

here some update pics on what ive done today so far.. hope i can work a lil more but dought ill get much done.. just cleaning up and taking measurments for the next parts to build..

i shouldave gotten some pics of the welds to get some input... not the nicest ones but i guess they are ok...




this one is how t loks with the winch mounted. the front plate got a lil curve so its not as close at it seems on the pic

and some all welded on the floor still need to clean the welds and finish em some more

actualy it was pure luck. When i cut it it took that shape. And i liked it so i ended using it. Still gota get a 2" reciver under the winch mount. And got 1 side almost cut. But i had to leave fast as i was late for class. Hope i can get more done on wed. If the rain lets me

 

a lil update... got a few more pices but havent welded on so theres no pics yet.....

this is a slow build as im a big noob in welding so i keep messing uo .. lol



i already got the sides done just gotta weld em up....

 

lols tarted raining today couldnt do anything... almost got the sides parts done and got a piece to work as a skid... a lil thin but ill do ok.

hope i can work somw tomarrow

yeah i still got it.. but not gona mount it.. ill try and see if i can sell it though.... it did cost me 160$ when i first bought it and like 60$ to mod it to have the winch mount around a year ago.

rains stop a while so i ad a chance to do a few things. i got a plate for the skid so hopefully tomarrow il get a chance to put it on and start couting and welding togeter the pieces for the sides and bottom. ill prolly have al sat do work on it :) finally a ful day to work... hope it doesent rain :S

btw u guys think itl look good to put the stock tow hooks under the front plate, right between the winch mount and the skid?

thats a hell of a garage floor! haha. yeah do that or maybe weld on some tabs for some D-rings

 

I would just cut some tabs and use d-rings like andy said, but I'm biased

 

yeah it sucks.. i tried to persuade my dad to keep the floor on cement.... but he insisted he wanted ceramic floor... so i gotta work outside.... i think i shouldave made a working table before the bumper... cant stand my back after a few hours of work :S

i like the drings.. but not sure were to mout em to be strong enough

 

It'll look great with the factory hooks. Coming along nicely!

 

the way I did mine was cut a rectangle hole and the tab is actually about one foot long or so and goes down the side of the winch box and is welded all the way down. Don't know if I explained it well but I will pull the truck apart before my tabs

 

thats a way.. i get the idea.... i just need to find some long tab. cause what im not sure would be it the tow hooks would be too far infront of the truck...

 

here is a pic of how far mine stick out, then the tab goes all the way to the back of the bumper, then fully welded

 

1 pic update. mounted the bumper to take some measurment. putted the stock tow hooks. i liked how they lookded. cutted the skid plate and started raining.. lol. atleast got a pic with it mounted :)
