Steering Setup for SAS'd 98+ Rangers with the Toyota steering box
#53
Hi, just wondered why everyone doing the steering change uses something other than ford. like can u use a ranger steering box or its not strong enough for u? I'm not doing a sas, I'm trying to make room for a set of shorty headers and they might work if I move steering shaft out of the way. my truck is 98 and has rack n pinion. I'm seriously thinking about grabbing an f150 setup out of a u pull it. I'm wanting to put the box on left outer frame rail so steering shaft will travel away from engine. I saw a utube video of a ranger newer than mine..mustang ranger he calls it..with this setup. he however does have a solid axle swap. they made the older rangers with that steering system and the didn't hav sas. I know I could solve my issue by spending $800 on a set of torque monster headers but id rather hit the u pull it and spend maybe 150 for the steering gear. any thoughts on my project...the 98 is ext cab, 3 in body, 4 in susp, 5.0 swap, 33x12.50s on American racing wheels.

Steering shaft for headers
Ok, any thoughts for moving the shaft for headers, like I'm planning a double u joint at top where body lift adaptor was..then a short piece of dd shaft going thru a collar bearing mounted on a brace bolted temporarily to frame. Then another double u joint that will be connected to a lower intermediate ranger shaft I'm getting so I can shorten it some. This will allow less angle for u joints. The steering is probable the biggest issue..if it works, headers can go on. If not...back to square one
