Hood scoops

Has anybody installed a hood scoop on a newer Ranger and made it functional? If so, do you have any pics or advice on the process? Thanks Meat

Wow that guy did a whole lot of work...

Meatloaf...I think your scoop looks better... ;)

meatloaf 04-24-2005 12:54 PM

Yes that was a lot of work! I don't intend to go to that extreme. Any pics of the ducting to the air inlet?

karrbass4life 05-25-2005 10:14 PM

I just say make a heat extractor. Get a Edge hood and on the piece near the window get a drill bit (your size preference) and drill as many holes as you want. Make sure you sanded down the entire area, so you can get the hood primered and painted. The whole idea behind this would be getting rid of the engine heat, you could possibly pick up a pony or two from this due to cooler engine temps.

TorRedRangerFX4 05-26-2005 12:37 AM

wow that guys hood is sooo sweet!

loneFX4 05-26-2005 04:27 PM

if he had used an xl hood then it would look better. the 4x4 xlt hood is sweet enough as it is. adding those scoops just makes it look...ugly for lack of a better term.

HighRollerII 05-29-2005 09:38 AM

man thats loooks freckin sweet..i was kinda wantin to do somethin with some scoops..cuz the hood is already like split kinda..i think it would look cool..even if it wasnt functional..

This is the area covered by my scoop,

Any ideas on how to fab-up some ducting? Thanks

loneFX4 05-30-2005 10:05 AM

^^^if you dont mind making the hood heavier then it already is then you could put some sheet metal that covers the entire underside and then cut a hole in it over your airbox area.

you could also put a sort of reverse scoop. or one upside down right under that and face it forward so when your moving it will push the air more out instead of just down.

Pinecone 05-30-2005 10:35 AM

His hood does nothing with air to the intake. It is only to decrease engine temps by having cold air go over the engine and hot air escape out the back. You would probably need to fab up a whole new intake if you wanted to make a ram air type setup, but I wouldn't do much for a truck like ours anyway. Maybe add not even 5 hp, not worth the fab time. But thats my humble opinion.

advantEDGE 05-30-2005 02:06 PM

how would you weather proof it also? I would think water running all over the engine would be bad for it, and look bad too.

olsonk_89 05-30-2005 02:26 PM

That looks cool, but way too much work for my taste:shrug:

HighRollerII 06-05-2005 06:23 PM

I am VERY impressed with the hood scoops on that guy's Ranger....

Do you guys think that would go good with my Saleen theme? I'd do the work myself.....I already have an Edge hood laying around....

**EDIT**

Here's a Saleen with the same style hood scoops.....

This may be a stupid question but what is going to happen if you are using a scoop for forced air intake and it is raining bad? Will the rain get into your engine?

meatloaf 06-06-2005 09:16 PM

I live in Arizona. What's Rain???? :boggled:
It hasn't rained here since 3/5/05 :biglaugh:

cheesehazard 06-06-2005 10:11 PM

Well I live outside of New Orleans and we get a lot of rain here which I like. Only problem is as soon as it starts to rain everyone forgets how to drive.

Hey John if your gonna do that what I would suggest doing if its possible is filling in the center part of the edge hood so its smooth. Then it will look like the hood on the stang and I think it would look better.

John Moorehead 06-07-2005 03:53 PM

^^^I agree
