Supercharger for towing?

Thinking about the rpcaster kit for my 02 fx4 manual?
I basically want it for power, but wonder about how it would work for towing, too much stress?

Redneckstone 11-27-2009 05:43 AM

well the truck still has the same gross weight so you didnt add towing capacity yes you will have more HP but yes more stress on the already not strong R1 trans

Noone 11-28-2009 10:37 AM

i've never found a good reference on how a supercharger hurts long term life on an engine... all i've seen is that it needed its own oil changed about every 6 months

i doubt towing with a sc would hurt it tho. i've seen people pulling with Harley trucks

no i would sayt aht a sc will not hurt the truck(assuming that you use a reasonable boost amount). its ot the engine i would worry about. as redneck stated the trans will prob be your fail spot. id either try to beef up your stock tranny or purchace a heavier duty one if your going to be doing serious towing.... these trucks are not made to tow stuff of much weight

Redneckstone 11-28-2009 11:40 AM

if you keep boost normal and not underdrive pulley it the motor will be fine. its the R1 i still think would be the problem child

Your also talking about a 5.4L V8 that has alot more towing power to begin with. That is not an accurate comparison.

yea its a full size truck that i partially built to tow things. bigger breaks, bigger motor, bigger better trans, bigger axels yatta yatta yatta

we've got a crappy ass manual trans....it go kaboom in stock output form(I would know)....i'd hate to see it with a screw ontop of it, much less towing quite a bit.

Simply doesn't have the structural integrity to do the S/C and in turn handle abuse , and simply doesn't have the right gear and is missing reliable hydraulic clutch system to support the towing of anything heavier than like 3500.

04_xlt_4.0_4x4 11-28-2009 01:37 PM

WHY OR WHAT MAKES THESE MANUALS SUCH SH!TTY TRANS???

TOPH R 11-29-2009 07:03 AM

Well my boat only weighs about 3000lbs TOPS on the trailer. So its not too bad, I just wanted a little more power. Zach mocked me for having a stick the first time i met him, hahaha.

Maybe i should throw the asp udp on my truck, I just want a little more jam for towing, once its going its fine, but its the up to speed part, and sometimes the maintaining speed part at low rpms thats bugging me. But I've had my fire chief (also a mechanic) drive the setup, and he says its fine and I'm just being too picky.

3000lb your truck can pull the fine normally so if you want to get the kit for ****s and giggles your will be ok...

by Zach do you mean me? why in hell would i mock someone for a manual? most the vehicles i have driven daily are manauls up till this black truck. which still might become a manual in time here

^^^ yes but i was towing between 4-5k with my truck almost ever weekend over the winter and my trans held up. but mine only has 30k in it since it was rebuilt

it can handle a little more but still really need to pay attention to the trans temps on these trucks they like to heat up fast. now having a trans temp gauge i notice this alot.

they love to blow reverse seals tho, mine has to have a rip on the oring or something it shutters in reverse

i know its a different engine, I'm talking about if a supercharged engine, or a supercharger itself, can handle the additional stress loads created by an towing. i really don't know anything about them.

i don't think many people who install a supercharger run it for 100k+ miles like most of us want out of our trucks.

Ranger093 02-20-2010 11:17 AM

Well, I don't know what you're pulling but my Ranger seems to pull everything just fine. I have even pulled a 1200 pound trailer with a Chevy 1500 on it and my truck squatted like a MOFO but the truck sure pulled great.
I'm fairly certain the Supercharger can handle the stress of the trailer. Its really not that big of a deal since it spools down to 1/2hp draw when you're not acclerating.

chevyslayer925 02-23-2010 11:36 AM

speaking from exp. buy an older f150 for towing, ive gone through 4 almost 5 automatics just from yanking pulling.

i dont like manual trans for towing unless its a bigger truck. like zach said these trans heat up way to fast, the factory trans cooler likes to blow the lines off, reverse and overdrive bands break way to easy. Hell my current trans doesnt like to shift unless i play with the shifter and even when crusing itll pop into neutral. Another thing these frames arent that thick, they twist very easily, if i have to post pics of what i recently did yanking a car through a 6ft pile of snow i will.

save your self the hassle, buy an older f150 with a v8 and either auto or stick..itll do the job.

Downey 02-23-2010 11:53 AM

i want to see them

chevyslayer925 02-23-2010 03:40 PM

yea yea, its a twisted frame, that and the trans really doesnt like me. time to buy another trans ha.
