Swapping my 1999 4x4 OHV 4.0 to a SC’d SOC 4L
I want to swap out my 4L OHV for supercharged SOC. BTW, I have a 1999 xcab 4x4 with an automatic transmission. The engine I’m looking at buying is a (unknown year) SOHC with a modbox kit and Eaton m90.
My questions are: is it a direct bolt in replacement? the engine comes with an ECU with a custom tune do I need to update/modify anything my truck ( I.e. do I need a new TCM? Thanks! |
Yes the motor mounts and current transmission will fit the 4.0l SOHC(but.....)
Yes, you will need the 4.0l SOHC computer AND wiring harness, 1999 wiring harness won't work But..............the 4.0l SOHC computer can't run the 1999 automatic, while they are both 5R55E models the 2001 and up 4.0l SOHC computer needs the TWO extra sensors added to the transmissions that year to operate the transmission, the ISS and OSS sensors If the 4.0l SOHC and computer are from a 1997-2000 Explorer then 1999 trans should work, if computer is from 2001 and up anything else then you will need to swap out 1999 trans for a 2001 and up trans So a 2001 - 2011 5R55E from 4.0l 4x4 I assume PATS was deleted in the 4.0l SOHC computer??? You will also need to access your 1999 PATS module, above glove box, to remove it and also to Ground the Pink/orange wire currently on Pin 1 of the PATS module, it grounds the starter relay in engine fuse box, PATS would ground it after Key passed the test but that won't happen if PATS was deleted in Computer |
The supercharged SOHC 4L is out of a 2004 Ford Ranger 4x4. So I’ll need a new tranny then, correct? Would I need a new TCM and accompanying harness? Will a tranny from a explorer or sportrac work? If so, what years? Thanks!

The engine I’m looking at is posted in the market place

I would check if PCM(computer) is for manual or automatic
If automatic then yes you would need to sell your 1999 trans and replace it with a 2001-2011 4.0l 4x4 trans that has the 2 extra sensors |
After speaking with the seller, he informed me the PCM and engine are from a 2004 4x4 Ranger w/ automatic transmission. So, based on the information provided in the previous post, I will need a 2001 - 2011 4x4 automatic transmission. Can it be from a Ranger or Explorer; or can it only be from a Ranger? Do I need to replace the TCM as well?

Yes, you would need a 2001-2011 transmission from a 4.0l 4x4
You have another problem 2004 PCM won't work without its original factory 2004 instrument cluster(HEC) That's a PATS(passive anti-theft system) issue, in 2004-2011 Ranger PATS is in the cluster 2005 PCM would work, no PATS in 2005, Ford skipped that one year 2001 to 2003 PCM would work WITH original keys, as its PATS is inside the PCM, not the cluster A Ford PCM programmer should be able to delete PATS in a 2004 PCM, they can on most other years, but don't know, you will just have to ask around, local Speed Shops often know programmers |
So I purchased the SC’d SOHC from a fellow member here on the site! I should have it sometime next week! I am super excited to tear into this project!
RonD mentioned that 2005 was an odd year in that you wouldn’t need the instrument cluster to get the computer to run the engine when transplanted into a new truck (something to do with PATS). So my question is: could I purchase a 2005 ECU and then transfer the custom dynotune from the 2004 ECU to the 2005 ECU? And if that were possible, would the 2005 ECU run my new 2004 engine (and my 2001 or newer 5r55e transmission?) I’m trying to figure out how I am going to get my new SC’d 2004 motor (and the 2001 or newer 5r55e) to work in my 1999 Ranger. Is there any other solutions? Because getting the instrument cluster that went with this engine (and ECU) isn’t possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated! |
1995 to 2003 Rangers have an analog dash
1999/2000 V6 Rangers have separate PATS module married to computer 2001 to 2003 V6 Rangers have PATS in the computer 2004 Rangers have the start of a CAN bus network in the dash, its wiring that connects all the modules together, so 2003 to 2004 dash wiring is quite different 2004 Ranger also got SJB as body computer, replacing the GEM, more under dash wiring differences 2004-2011 Rangers have digital dash with PATS, 2005 was skipped, no PATS 2004-2011 Ranger computers are married to Digital dash, not PATS related, odometer roll back related Your best bet is to use a 2001-2003 4.0l SOHC computer(with 2001+ 5R55E) and wiring harness in your 1999 Ranger conversion You will need PATS keys for that computer As far as I know any "tune" can be loaded to any EEC-V computer |
Is it possible to just delete PATS out of the 2004 ECU? Would that allow the new engine and tranny to function properly?
|
PATS was in the dash in 2004, but I don't see why you couldn't reprogram computer but really don't know
2004 computer needed to "handshake" with its "paired/married" dash with key on, or it wouldn't work, that's different than PATS Ford added that so people couldn't swap in lower mile clusters, which had been an issue with all Fords until digital dash was used |
Ok, I see. I appreciate the wisdom. I’m trying to figure out the easiest way to get this new motor working in my truck.

2001-2003 4.0l SOHC computer with its engine wiring harness with a PATS key would be easiest as far as I can see for a 1999 Ranger
The 4.0l SOHC was first used in 1997 Explorer so that may also be an option, I don't think the 1997 had PATS, 1998 for sure did, and separate module as well But you would still need the wiring harness |
