2001~2003 Pushbutton Door Chime Disable

If you're like me, you probably find the "key sense" reminder chime to be a real nuisance when working on the truck or just listening to the radio with the door open. On the other hand, it has saved me from locking myself out on more than one occasion.

This mod uses a simple pushbutton and a relay that gives you the option to silence the chime when the ignition switch is in the ACC position and the driver door is open. I find this arrangement perfect for cleaning or working on the truck with the driver door open and the radio on in ACC.

• Pressing the pushbutton silences the annoying key sense chime when in ACC mode with the driver door open
• If the pushbutton is not operated, the chime works exactly as it did from the factory
• Reverts to factory operation whenever the ignition switch is moved from ACC or the driver door is closed
• The automatic re-enable reduces the risk of locking the keys in the truck
• Headlight chime is not affected by this mod

A relay socket makes wiring the relay easy and reliable. It is also possible to use 5 individual wire terminals pushed directly onto the relay spades:



The wire colors that I used as seen on the back of the relay socket
(Also see diagram below):

Blacks (Pins 85&87): connect together and then to one lug of the pushbutton
Blue (pin 86): tapped to the ACC power wire in the radio harness (Yellow/Black)
Yellow/Black (center pin 87A): to GEM (cut Yellow/Black near GEM)
Yellow/Black (lower pin 30): to driver door switch (cut Yellow/Black near GEM)



The pushbutton that I used. It has two black wires soldered to its lugs: one is connected to two of the relay pins (85 & 87) and the other goes to chassis ground. Any normally open (NO) pushbutton that can handle a half amp or more at 12v should work.



I installed the button by drilling a hole in the cover for the Restraints Control Module just forward of the floor shifters. It is out of the way yet easy to reach. Most Rangers don't have this exact style RCM cover but there are plenty of other places available that would work. Just be sure to check for adequate clearance for the hidden part of the switch and its wires.



The relay was mounted up inside the dash using double-sided tape. Another way would be to get the type of relay that has a mounting tab molded into the cover, then fasten it using a screw or bolt.


Parts I used:

Pushbutton (Normally open): Radio Shack P/N 275-609
Bosch-pattern Automotive Relay (SPDT): Ford P/N FOAZ-14N089-A
Bosch-pattern Automotive Relay socket: www.allelectronics.com P/N SRLY-2
3M ScotchLok wire tap
3M Double-sided mounting tape
Heatshrink tubing
scrap wire (16~18ga)

The part numbers above are what I happened to use. All of these parts are generic and readily available from many other sources.

Good mod Bob. I have a list of stuff to get for the ABS disable and ACC power key off mods. Looks like I'll have to add some more parts to the list.

Hey Bob I know another method to this mod. It's called the "screwdriver to doorchime mod". Someone taught it to me in auto class.

Just wanted to add that this Mod WORKS on 3rd generation trucks also. I did exactly as described in the "How-To" on my 95 and 96 Rangers.

 

Well done! I never would have thought of that, lol. Similar to your ABS cutoff with the latching relay configuration.

This is superior to the GEM recircuiting mod I did years ago, because it's "self re-configuring". I like it!

 

I installed it a while back and it works like I charm. Highly recommend it to anyone...works great with four doors so you can share your music.

i forgot i wanted to do this mod... hmm... and i have today off with nothing to do....


i guess a momentary switch (i think that's what it's called) wouldn't work, right? just asking cause i know i have one in the garage already.

 

The pushbutton is a normally open, momentary-on switch. If you have the equivalent, it will work.

However, if it the kind of switch that turns on and stays on, it won't work.

 

duh, i just now looked at the diagram and saw the momentary switch, lol. i saw the diagram above at a glance and figured you used a 2way switch.... flip it on, and the door will chime like normal... flip it off... and it'll cut power to the chimmer.

 

Perhaps, but that type circuit ain't my "innovation" either, lol. Sometimes it's not the technology, it's applying it. I'm applauding your application. I have not done EITHER mod, lol. For the ABS I'm doing the "pull fuse 14" mod...

 

any hints on the wiring colors for a 2004 F150?? this is a mod id love to do

 

There's probably a way to do it, Bob, but I don't have a 2004 F150 wiring manual. The newest I have is 2002 F150 and I don't know if it is the same.

 

Auto up/down turns itself off when the BCM senses a high amperage spike to let the computer know the window has hit the top or bottom so you'd have to completely change the other 3 window switches and have a custom BCM to the best of my knowledge unless you could get them all wired to the auto up/down circuit of the drivers window except then you could only roll down one window at a time or else the high amperage would stop itself. If there is a way to do it I'd love to know.

Yes, this schematic was tested on a 2004 and has been confirmed to work. I suspect that it would also work on 2005~2006 but, AFAIK, it has not been tested on those years.

 

Is there an easy way to just turn it off for good without messing with any switch wiring or anything?

 

The GEM controls the dome light, door ajar indicator and the chime based on input from the driver door switch. You can fool it by using the passenger door input instead which only operates the dome light and door ajar indicator.
