help with back spacing

Hey guys a friend of mine wants to buy some wheels and he knows what back spacing he needs but the person selling the wheels dosn't know what they are. Is there a way we could measure the wheel to find the back spacing. Thanks.

Take the measurement on the back side of the wheel. The horizontal rule is resting on the wheel lip. The vertical on is on the mounting face.

On factory Ranger wheels, this measurement is 4 1/2".

if you were running stock rims with a 4 1/2 backspacing and went to rims that had a bs of 3 5/8, being the same rim width. it would now sit 7/8's of an inch further out?

Yes, that is correct as long as both wheels have same width.
