83-88 Dually???

i was driving to skool today and traffic was backed up so i took a different route then i normally do. Well i came to a stop sign and i looked across the street and parked on the curb was a dually ranger 83-88 style. is it custom? i couldn't tell because the paint looks original and if it is a custom swap it was done very near new because the flairs matched the bed and rest of the truck as far as fade, wear, and what not. no this wasnt stepside bed, it was a dually. has anyone else seen one of these?

yes, it's a custom, however, it isn't the only one. back in the mid '80's, a company made dually rangers.

A buddy of mine made his own back in 1991. It is long since been sold, but he said there was a kit he bought.

man...it's even got the big tip that looks closely in proportion to a full size diesel duallie. I think shane may have found a new project. Imagine, ex cab duallie slammed on it nuts, 19" alcoas, suede black, and of course a 4BT powering it with stacks out the bed

Zimmer badge

I bought a ranger said to be a Zimmer edition was looking through the truck and I found a old Zimmer badge metal with a number on the back. I then started to look online for it and I found out that Zimmer didn't keep records untill 1995 if I'm right so I just want to know what you have found.

the number is hand stamped on the back and the mount studs are broke off but the number is 83818586

Easy enough to do if you have the knowledge and place and parts.
I remember back in the 80's you could buy dually "kits" for Rangers and Chevy/GMC S 10's from JC Whitney. You could find kits in every truck magazine.

All Zimmer was, starting back in the late 70's, I believe, was a company that did custom van conversions. They are primarily the company that took Ford/Chevy/Dodge vans and converted them into the plush road cruisers that were popular at the time.
They also made custom add on parts for pick up trucks, including Rangers and the Gen Motors S 10. I don't think they did any dually conversions as that would have voided the new vehicle warranty.
They were nothing more than fiberglass parts, fancy paints and interiors.
The company would do the conversions several ways...either per an owners request where they would customize an owners vehicle, or a local dealer would have conversions done on vehicles which were then sold by the dealers, as new, because they were, with the added price of the customization.
I remember in So. Fla, in the mid 80's a Zimmer dealership that carred and sold all of the conversions exclusively.
So, it's very possible, even probable, the original owner "bought it new" from a dealer.

Zimmer also made those funky looking cars starting in the 70's. Thats primarily where they started. Then came van and truck conversions, and they converted many vans into 5th wheel travel trailer haulers.
