Just got my new Ranger and am going to purchase some rims from the junk yard to mount some snow tires for this winter. One thing that is bothering me is the tire pressure monitoring system and how will it react to rims that don't have the sensors attached?

I'm assuming that the system will detect there are no sensors in the "new" rims, so either the idiot light will stay on all the time or it will blink (if I'm reading the manual correctly). Either one will drive me crazy!

Short of buying rims from the dealer, what are my options?
Am I concerned over nothing and rims without the sensors won't bother the system?
Remove the fuse from the system to disable it?
Any other ideas?

You can buy the sensors & straps from your local Ford dealer, and have them programmed to your winter rims................

If you put rims on without TPMS, you will definitely be reminded of it every 2 seconds while driving, and it will definitely drive you nuts. I just installed some custom rims on an '07 Silverado without the TPMS sensors on them and I was annoyed by the time I pulled it out of the shop.

It is possible to remove the sensors from your stock wheels and put them onto your winter rims. One of my friends did this with the aftermarket rims on his F-150, but they were the same size as the stock ones.

Beater: I could probably do that, but it would be simpler at that point to keep the same rims and change out the tires twice per year. And that is too much of a PITA for me.

nope, there strapped to the rim. little box with a strap around the rim!

Is there anyway to disable the system? I check my tire pressure regularly so it really doesn't do me much good anyway.

 

I'd put the system on the new wheels as well if it were me. It'd just be one less thing to worry about. I haven't used any sensor except for the ones in the valve stems themselves, and I've never seen a way to disable them either.

 

if ford hasnt link edthe tpms to the abs and stuff like that, and you can live with a light on the dash, then i wouldnt worry about the sensors. i hate the way ford uses the bands and sensor. if they ran a system like chevy, toyota, nissan, with the sensor attached to the valve stem, then it wouldnt be to hard to change over on your own.

 

if you run a bigger tire, wont it turn on the light anyways?

Been reading on this subject and I didn't realize that this was a new law enacted by the feds. Looks like I'm stuck with shelling out a ton of money or trying to ignore the idiot light.

This just makes me so-o-o-o-o-o happy!

 

the light wont be on everytime you start your car. my light only comes on afer 30min of driving. when i took the system off the light didnt come on for 3days. its kinda weird. if u want to spend the extra money go ahead, i didnt and im doing fine without it. i think its a waste if u do regular checks on your vehicle like i do. everytime i get gas i check the air pressure, i just get into the process of doing it everytime i fill up.

and for the big tires thing. if u have the sensors with the big tires you need to go to the dealer and reprogram the ecu to the reccommended pressure of the tires so the dash light comes on at the right time. so yea thats a PITA too. so thats something to think about too!

 

On mine the light will flash for about the first 20 seconds and then it stays on solid afterwards.
I just put a piece of black tape in front of it so I can't see it.... (cheap and easy fix )

 

Actually Chevy has a rubber TPMS sensor on some vehicles now, you can unscrew the sensor but still need a new valve stem to hook it up to a different wheel, because the rubber stem will rip apart if you try to remove it. Another dumb design if you ask me.

Too bad drivers can't just be responsible and check their air pressure like we've done for...i dunno, the past 100 friggin' years!

this i know, i deal with it every day. but i figured i wouldnt go into that much detail, because these pansy get their >>>> in a bunch when we talk about rival auto makers to much.

 

just get and aftermarket TPMS system, they do more anyway

 

from what i heard is that you can remove the strap sensor and put them on your new wheels and get them reprogrammed

and no if you get a bigger tire it wont effect the sensor

 

you dont have re program the it if you mark where you take the wheel off an put the new wheel in the same place as for the strap just buy some new ones
