LED door lock indicator mod

Here are some photos of my truck's LED door lock indicators. There are 4 bipolar LEDs which are controlled by a relay box tied into the Central Security Module (CSM), the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). This mod is a variation on an idea pioneered by John Griggs. Thanks, John!!

The LEDs that are in place of the lock pins operate when the key is off. They flash red or green to indicate locked or unlocked status. These are the most useful at night since bright sunlight tends to wash out the color somewhat.

The second pair of LEDs is by the door lock rocker switches. This location is easy to see in the daytime because the LEDS are usually shaded from direct sunlight. Again, green is unlocked and red is locked. These do not blink and are illuminated whenever the key is on. They also remain lit for about 20 minutes after the last time the key was turned off or the last time the remote keyfob or rocker switch was used.

Yes, getting rid of the lock rods and pins was a key part of the mod.

Very cool. So, out of pure curiosity, is there no longer a way to open the doors if you forget your keys and don't have a remote? Like, you can't use a slim-jim?

I don't think it is any secret that a slim-jim is used for unlocking vehicles or any make/model. I can see not letting the *other* secret out but the slim jim is definately not a secret.

Damnit I want to know what FireRanger said. Maybe something like "disconnecting the battery will pop the doors open" or somthing..?

I don't think FireRanger said anything anyone could use to figure out anything about whatever. A SlimJim, everyone knows, and he didn't mention anything else about whatever might be thought to construe alternative methods of entry into something that shouldn't be entered into rightly.

Nice install, Bob.

Of course, there's always a way in. There could be some variant of the slim jim that will open it without damage. Don't know.

Very nice enhancements on my original idea, Bob!!!

Very good looking. I only did the lock rod holes, and only running off of one servo output. That's good. Did you use the mag latching relays I pointed you to?

And I'm SO glad I took those lock rods out.

I did Carl's and Adam's truck with this mod, but never did mine. I may do mine using YOUR idea now, I really like it!

Which leads to the question... Can't you just pull the door handle to see if it's locked :) :)

Not if you've already walked away from the truck. Besides, what fun is that?

You can also stick your hand out the window to see the temperature, but the overhead console is cooler, lol!

Thanks, John! That's high praise coming from the mother of all modders .... so to speak.

Yes, I used the same relays and LEDs that you recommended. I have 4 relays because I separated the left and right functions and use 1 set of LEDs for key off and the other for key on. All four LEDs remain on for a while after key off because I used the battery saver dome/map/glove box light circuit to power the LEDs by the switches. This makes it easier to check to make sure the doors are locked when leaving the truck in bright sunlight.
