Get manual hubs. You save a bit of gas and you can add a locker with no worries.

Are they live axle or pulse vacum hubs? 2000 was the crossover year so they could be either way, Live axle you can't put lockout hubs on, only pulse vacuum hubs you can.

I've done this swap, probably the biggest pita is the missing mount on the frame for the front differential. I made one and bolted it in but had it welded at the muffler shop. BTW make sure your rear gears match the front if your not swapping the rear axles out.

You don't need new brake pads or calipers unless your current ones are worn out. You will need new rotors though. They differ from 4x2 to 4x4. Since you have a donor truck why not use the rotors off that truck? If they are shot or something you can just buy a set of rotors for a 2000 4x4. They should be the 11.25" rotors. In 2003 they switched to a 12" rotor and you can't use those unless you're using a knuckle from a 2003 or newer truck.

The front driveshaft might not be the right one... as the 97 is a TTB truck and your truck is IFS... I'm not positive on that so don't take my word on it...

Yeah that driveshaft will be too long. You need to find a front shaft out of a 95-96 explorer. It will be the only one with the correct flanges and the correct length.
