Ugh...need help

So my stupid trucks has been giving me issues. A month ago or so it wouldn't start so I figured the stock battery died. No big deal, bought a new battery from Autozone and its good to go...right?

Wrong

Still having issues getting the truck started randomly, it takes me cranking it for 3-4 seconds before it finally catches and it barely does at that. It does it at random times. Sometimes when the engine is cold, sometimes when its warm. When that happens I can smell a strong smell of gas. Also when that happens it makes this terrible loud noise that I can't pinpoint where its coming from. Its not from the engine, its more like under the drivers door. I got a video of the noise at lunch today

Any help would be great, this truck is going bye bye if I can get enough to pay of my loan on it.

brianjwilson Aug 27, 2010 12:44 PM

Not able to see it on my phone.
Is it cranking and just not firing?
Occasionally (once every two months) when I go to start mine and it is hot, it won't start right up. Cranks, starts to fire and dies. If I cycle the key again and let the fuel pump run it is worse. My theory is that some fuel leaks out of an injector and floods it slightly. The last two times it did this I just cranked again right away without the fuel pump priming and I started right up.
I'm not sure what the fix is, maybe a bad check valve or something, but it rarely happens and never leaves me stranded. When the engine is hot I don't let the fuel pump prime first. Funny thing is the fuel injected helicopter I fly does the same thing. lol. Procedure calls for priming 2-3 seconds when hot but it often floods the cylinders.

But like I said I can't watch the video right now.

04blackedge Aug 27, 2010 12:49 PM

The video is of the horrible noise its making now. It sounds like a air compressor is running, its super loud. Only does it randomly though. Which that could be something simple like a loose heat shield of something, I just haven't gotten under to look yet and figured I'd see if you guys have experienced before.

Maybe I have an injector that is faulty, that would explain a lot. Erghhhhhhh!

brianjwilson Aug 27, 2010 12:54 PM

Put it on YouTube!

04blackedge Aug 27, 2010 01:06 PM

Here is it on Vimeo, I think they finally went HTML5 so you should be able to see it

Untitled on Vimeo

Ugh it won't work on my phone for some damn reason. I'll put it up on youtube too

brianjwilson Aug 27, 2010 01:19 PM

I ended up back home anyway so I looked at the video.

Huh, weird... Sounds like a loose heatshield or something to me...
Does it change when it is in gear? In reverse? While driving?

It seems weird that it would be related to the hard start condition. Does your hard start sound similar to what I described, other than yours does it when it is cold?

04blackedge Aug 27, 2010 01:33 PM

Mine doesn't just do it just when its cold, it does it randomly. Like it did it after lunch, I drove 15 minutes there so truck was at warm temp and it only sat for 30 minutes. It stops after I start moving for more than 5 seconds. It still continues when I shift the gears though. Its loud enough so that I can hear it with the windows up so I think I would still be able to hear it if I was moving. Its on youtube now lol, I couldnt remember my account so I had to make a new one

brianjwilson Aug 27, 2010 02:25 PM

The noise really seems like something loose under there. The hard start, don't know. My hard start happens only when warm/hot. Like if I shut off, get fuel, get back in and start it. Still it RARELY happens but that is the most common scenario, it has done it when I parked for 20-30 minutes as well. Never when it has been sitting for a longer period.

04blackedge Aug 27, 2010 02:58 PM

Yeah thats what I am thinking too, I'll look at it after work.

The starting issue really has me worried, its almost like its not going to start sometimes. If this POS leaves me stranded I'm going to be pissed

Ranger_Envy Aug 27, 2010 04:35 PM

If you think the truck is flooding, you could try starting it with the pedal to the floor. I know on a GM vehicle this puts it into "flood mode" and shuts off the injectors until it fires. You could also slap a fuel pressure gauge on and see what happens. If its starts losing pressure badly after shutting it off then you know there is a problem.

korey89 Aug 27, 2010 04:47 PM

Yeah that definitely sounds like a loose heatshield or something, it was my first thought when I saw it too. I'd get under there and look around. The starting issue sounds somewhat similar to what my dads truck has done on me before. It would like crank and then stall, I'd crank again and it would start fine. These are more reasons I'm just becoming less and less of a Ford fan everyday.

It has a throttle by wire system so will putting the pedal to the floor still do anything?

I can't answer that. There might be something in the owners manual about it or you could just try it. I'd think the PCM would see the voltage from the TPS and still be able to figure out that you WOT.

04blackedge Aug 27, 2010 07:32 PM

I wish I could figure out what was causing it to happen. As of right now I can't pin point it though, it seems completely random.

04blackedge Sep 14, 2010 10:42 PM

Well truck finally threw a code tonight when I was starting it

P0302 Cylinder #2 Misfire
P0316 Engine Misfire Detected on Startup (First 1000 Revolutions)

Which I'm not really upset about now I at least know where to start looking. Going to be replacing the plugs shortly and then go from there if that doesn't fix it. Its pretty annoying though, it won't start on the first and sometimes second crank if its been sitting for a while. I need to change the fuel filter as well so I'll be getting some maintenance done on it which is good.

Going to check for moisture under the coil first. I'd love for it to be something easy like that.

God,Country,FORD Sep 16, 2010 11:17 AM

dam dude. how many miles are on your truck?! makes me start to worry about my truck lmao. I know my truck has had a few problems recently.. the wiring for the sound system shorted somehow so the the amp was turning on and off even if the truck was not on, which was draining the battery, then something in the shifter broke, so i have to replace the shifter which is around 500-600 bucks all together! lmao.. its great.

hopefully its jsut as simple( and i use the word simple very lightly) as changing the plugs bro! let us know

04blackedge Sep 16, 2010 11:26 AM

Custom? LOL

zabeard Sep 16, 2010 06:51 PM

it makes that noise when you crank it? that sounds horrible.

i doubt it is injectors or spark plugs. its something else.

04blackedge Sep 16, 2010 06:54 PM

That noise was after it cranked, when it was running. Its gone now though, its unrelated from the starting issue. I think it was something to do with the MBRP exhaust, I'm back to stock now and its running better.

It won't start on the first crank after its been sitting now though. Normally catches on the second though
