I've been scoping out fullsizes a lot lately. I am seriously considering a 01-03 7.3L. I would defiantly consider a 6.0L but I wouldn't use it like it needs to be used and the low maintenance of the 7.3L is just too good to pass up. Plus big trucks are so cheap right now because of gas prices. The dealers are flooded with the damn things. The only crappy thing is my favorite body style is the 08-10 SD.

Just as there exists "lemon" vehicles. The worst combination of all the mediocre or mid-grade parts.
There also exists the exact opposite: an "apple" vehicle
By that I mean a vehicle that got (instead of mediocre parts) the best possible combination of parts, all packaged into one, just by chance.
From the standard deviation, the vehicle got the tranny/motor/axle/cooling system/turbo system/computer system/transfercase ect ect with the least variance in design/manufacture tolerances, that lending to the best and most useful lifespan of all the components that makes up the vehicles. This is VERY rare....but it happens.....more often than not with diesels matter of fact due to the heavy duty nature of the powertrain.
This is extremely rare in gas motors.
Most gas vehicles will get mostly good components, but a tranny or rear axle that will grenade @ 100k. One component usually singles itself out and fails long before the others.
Also, driving habits, maintenance and use within or outside of the intended design purposes ALL have influences on how long a vehicle lasts.

When I was at my previous job I was a delivery driver. We had 2 f350s that were 93 year models that weren't turbos and got to 450k miles before the company bought new ones. We also had 2 e350s 2003 models with 5.4s and had 450k miles or so each. Never replaced an engine or tranny. Only problem was one of them had a picky cylinder that had to be cleaned more often
