04 Edge Pics

Just bought my first truck... 2004 Ranger Edge, auto 2WD 3.0. My biggest goal is fuel economy since this is my new DD (Mustang in the garage). What are my first steps to maximize my fuel economy? Here are some pics...

ok, let me clarify... what physical mods to my truck can I make to optimize my fuel economy? I am well aware that driving habits have a large factor in fuel economy.

Actually the best is the hard plastic net looking thing that replaces the tailgate.

airbox mod... interesting.... does that require retuning the PCM to adjust for altered air-fuel ratios?

I will attempt the airbox mod this weekend. Probably a drop-in K&N as well. Now I have to decide which of the hundreds of tonneau covers...

Very nice truck, looks really clean. There is a guy on here that specializes in maximizing his fuel economy. Contact him or search for some of his posts. His user name is wydopnthrtl.

Nothing needs to be adjusted

You will probbaly fill a little more power from taking off at a dead stop. You should also notice more power while driving and "stomping" on the gas

a bed cover is the best, and tailgate down/off is the worst

getting a 3.0 for fuel economy is a joke haha

The best thing I ever did was get the 2.3 in my 07 to get away from the 15mpg average city driving.

Its no joke, Mark... I'm getting 22 MPG in the Ranger, a far cry from the 12 MPG highway that I get in my GT500. This is a major upgrade in fuel economy for me. I just want to maximize it, that's all.

Nice truck....Yeah, I did the airbox mod, bought a drop ion K&N filter, Flowmaster dual exhaust and a soft tonnoe cover and I gained between 3-5 MPG. Also keep checking tire pressure.

sully, thanks for the info. In your opinion, is the investment value of the K&N, Flowmasters, and tonneau worth 3-5 MPG? I will be getting a tonneau cover anyway as I think it looks nice plus adds a very small bit of security, so I guess that narrows it down to.... does the K&N drop-in and flowmasters give an adequate ROI?

That 22 must be highway because thats about what my 3.0 pulls on the highway from what i remember, its not my daily driver and not stock size tires anymore so i dont even care but I averaged about 15 city and 20 something highway babying it.

I can rag the hell out of my 2.3 and get 28 city all day long and i have pulled 35+ mpg on the highway
