Thinking about buying a Ranger

I am thinking about buying a Ranger and saw the following post at Craigslist.....

"$4,000, 2001 Edge, automatic, 4x4, 4 door, cold A/C, Factory C/D, running boards, bed liner, 4.0 SOHC, white exterior, factory alum wheels, decent rubber, good glass, sliding rear window,
p steering, p brakes, p locks, cruise, clean non ripped grey interior, raer step bumper>>>>> 84K original miles.

Runs and drives well, needs a cam chain tensioner
My big loss and your super Gain, books for over $8,000 top and almost $5,000 low.

E-mail for pics if interested, may listen to an offer OR may take a partial trade.

I uploaded 2 pictures of the truck to my personal website...

I do not like that it needs a cam chain tensioner. Is this a huge negative and a sign of bigger problems? I don't mind making some repairs.

He said that he would take less money, and that it needs to go. Carfax is clean, single owner, but has a gap from 2002-2007. The price seems very low. Does the whole thing seem fishy or do you think it might be ok?

Thanks,

Bruce

What year? The SOHC 4.0 engines rattle from 01 to 03 with 01 being the worst.

Well those have the worst tensionor problems. If the rear ones are bad then you have to pull the engine out of the truck.

I would get it anyways. I dont think you could beat the price. It looks like its in pretty good condition from what I can see.

He said that he would sell it to me for $3250, no lower, and that he is a dealer. I don't know what it would cost to replace the timng chains and tensioner. Anyways, I have't even seen the truck yet.

Dont (Unless your mechanically savy). This is coming from an 01 owner. Ford worked the majority of the bugs out by 2003. To fix the timing chain isn't cheap.
