Is 190k miles on a 4.0 v6 4x4 Ranger too many?
Hello, I was looking at buying a 4x4 Ranger that said they had the transmission overhauled 20k miles ago, but the truck has 190k miles on it. Is that too high for a well-maintained have all the service records Ranger. 4.0 V6.? It's around 7k, but everything's expensive nowadays (at least to me.)
EDIT: 1999 XLT |
Welcome to the forum
Used vehicles are always a roll of the dice, at 22 years old there will be parts that are getting worn out 4.0l OHV engine was VERY reliable, used in Rangers and other Ford models from 1990 to 2000 350-400k miles wouldn't be at all unusual before rebuild was needed These engines only had one weak point, which is TOTALLY in drivers control, they MUST NOT be over heated, or you will crack a head, if you see the temp gauge getting up close to 3/4 pull over and shut off engine Assuming Automatic transmission? Its a 5R55E model if so Ford used this transmission from 1986 thru 2011 in Rangers, 26 years, as A4LD, 4R55E and then 5R55E, so also very reliable But it is an automatic, which means ALOT can go wrong, rebuilding is fine if done right, cheap rebuilds often fail within 2 years, just after warranty is over, lol Best you can do is a test drive, make sure there is no DELAY when shifting to Reverse or Drive, means a pressure issue, and no slipping or "flaring" when shifting gears on the road There were no issues with 1999 model year, its 3rd generation, 1998 to 2011 4x4 should have Manual Locking front hubs by now, the stock PVH "automatic" hubs did have issues, but not hard to switch to Manual version Look in the local truck trader or craigslist to see what the current "asking price" is for similar vehicles Used Ranger buyers guide seen here: https://www.therangerstation.com/for...-buyers-guide/ |
