2006 longbed Ranger. This was a service vehicle. I had the engine rebuilt.
I have a starterproblem, altho I found a possible solution reading here.
How about the transmission? Should I have an expert do overhaul? General checkup?
A Florida Truck. No rust, no obvious structural problems.
What is life expectancy?
Thanks J

Manual or automatic trans?
Manuals just need the clutch changed when it starts to slip, depends on driving habits of when that is needed.
The M5OD-R1 transmissions use ATF, yes automatic transmission fluid in a manual trans.
It should be checked for level once a year, it uses Mercon V
If it is getting darker in color change it as it was overheated.
Automatic will be the 5R44E, or 55E, depending on engine size
Needs fluid changed and new filter every 100k miles or so
Check color, again, overheating is what kills transmissions so darker color is bad, change it sooner than later.
You shouldn't rebuild transmissions until there is an obvious problem, automatics tend to get internal leaks and lose pressure inside, Reverse requires highest pressure so slow engagement or no Reverse is a sign that rebuild is needed, and once pressure starts to drop clutches and bands start to slip causing more overheating.
There is no "timing" or miles of how long an engine or transmission will last, overheating of either shortens its life.
Service vehicles are often treated poorly by the drivers because they don't own the vehicle.
But they are often serviced(oil, coolant, trans fluid) on schedule unlike privately owned vehicles where coolant and oil are not serviced on time.
So hard to say.
Chassis and suspension are long lasting, ball joints do wear out just like tires
Exhaust systems rust from the inside out so they also do wear out, Cats and Mufflers
no crystal ball for how long any used vehicle will last, just no history for that call
