2000 ranger 4.0 automatic transmission problem

when I start my truck, let it idle, put it in drive, it doesn’t push itself forward when I am on the gas.. it jut revs past 4500 rpm and only gets higher if I push it further. So usually I just put it in 2 and it drives fine my but speedometer doesn’t move. It stays on zero. I have no idea what the problem could be.

transission fluid is full
the truck has 79k miles
4.0 ranger
please help.

Speedometer and transmission issues are separate

Does Reverse work fine?
no delay and you don't have to raise RPMs

You have a 5R55E transmission

The sprag clutch, one-way clutch, OD sprag are most like problem if you have to start in 1st or 2nd and then can shift to drive, but have to go back to 1st or 2nd to get going again after stopping

This requires a full tear down, so might as well put in new clutches, bands, OD drum and Pump
No, not a valve body issue, although you can get a new one if you want, not a waste of money since you should use a new one for a rebuild in any case

5R55E was used in 4.0l Rangers and Mazda B4000s from 1998 to 2011, if you look for a used one it MUST match 2WD or 4WD which ever you have, these can not be converted

Does the Odometer work, or is it not moving as well, odo and speedo share the same signal wire?
So if neither works then no signal at dash
If Odometer works then speedo motor in dash is bad, they use separate motors

In 2000 the speedometer gets it speed signal from GEM module and ABS sensor on rear axle
Is the ABS Light on?
If so change the ABS sensor on rear axle, that should get speedometer working again

If ABS light works(comes on with key then goes off), but is not on when driving then have the computer codes read, if you see P0500 then GEM module is most likely issue.
If no Codes then could be wire on back of dash is pulled out
