2003 FX4 LF hub replacement

hey all...question when i got my truck inspected last week the tech said my LF wheel had excessive play to it which means the bearing is starting to go bad....not bad enough to fail...he said that i need a new hub because it is a sealed unit...I was just wondering if anybody has replaced one of these before because i really dont want to take it to the dealer and shell out 400 bucks...thanks in advance for help

I think its just a matter of unbolting it out of the front end and putting in a new one once you get the tire and rotor off but I'm not 100% sure. I'm pretty sure they are one non-servicable unit but I'm not sure. We had a new one put on the rear of our MKX because the bearing was making noise but it was done under warranty so it was free. I know it was one piece. Might want to check your ball-joints and tie rod ends before you drop the cash on the hub assembly. I'm sure they aint cheap.

yepper well first the hub itself is expansive. you take off the tire, remove the brake components, disconnect the ABS plug and un-snap the wires from the clips, remove the large CV nut, remove the 3 bolts holding it on. some need the hub puller that can be rented at an auto parts store some dont neither of mine needed it just a couple hits with a hammer and it came right off

If it seems stuck on there, put the tire back on with 3 lug nuts and kick the tire...off it comes. Or if youre like Zach you can "beat it off"

I had one go at less than 75,000km (46,000 miles). Keep an eye on it, they can go quick!

thanks god for my simple all manual 2wd. less stuff to replace. i think my total suspension over haul (all timken bearings, moog ball joints and control arms, ties, axle seals, and bushings) would be under $800. with 4x4 it would be like $1200.

It isn't uncommon to have the wheel bearings in rangers go bad that quickly.

One of my F150 front wheel bearings went bad at 55k miles with 35" tires for the last 25k miles even.

Did you notice any excess noise? I know when the bearing/hub in our MKX was going bad it sounded like a mud tire was on that corner of the vehicle. It had a "hum" that was realative to speed. Just glad it was warranty and free.

Why wouldn't you replace it if you know it has excessive play. You're just waiting to see your wheel leave you?
