2008 Mazda - Gauges going out?

My dad's '08 Mazda has been having an intermittent problem with the gauge cluster.

He'll be driving along and randomly the airbag light, ABS and fog light indicators will all light up on the dash, and shortly after, the gauges will shut down and all go to Zero while driving, and after a couple seconds everything will be back to normal again. It may or may not do it again afterwards, but tonight on his 60 mile drive home from work, it did it 6 times.

The truck is at the dealer right now. He took it in last time and they scanned it and it just read "high voltage" as the problem. So, sounds like there was a voltage spike, either from the ECU, a module or the alternator.

Has anyone else heard of this problem?

I'm guessing it's the alternator itself of the ECU sending some sort of strange signal to trip thw warning lights and shut the cluster down.

But since it was scanned as a High Voltage Spike last time, I would almost assume it is the alternator spiking for some reason.

My dad's '05 500 did the same thing a few times, a week or two later the car died on him on the highway. Replaced the alternator and all was well, been fine every since.

He just got the truck back from the dealer this morning. Turns out it was the alternator spiking and was replaced under warranty, as it was deemed a defective part. He's only got just over 40k km on the truck.

His friend's son has a 2007 B4000 and he said that his has done the same thing on him once. This might be a problem for you guys to watch out for.
