2019 Ranger Coolant

Happy Thanksgiving all!

I noticed my coolant is a tad below the minimum level.
I have a Prestone universal coolant that I used to top off my wife’s 2017 Honda Civic.
Would it be okay to top off my 2019 Ranger with that same coolant?

Thanks!

Yes, that would be fine, most car makers are now using HOAT(hybrid organic acid technology) based coolant, usually yellow or gold in color, although there is NO standard color code for coolant

Silicate based, was the first type used, usually Green, lasts 2 years
OAT based, came around in the early 1990s, Red/Pink, mostly used in Japanese vehicles, 5 year life
US car makers switched to OAT in the late 1990s as it did work better with "mixed" metals, i.e. cast iron blocks with aluminum heads

These two types of coolants should NOT be mixed, it will form a sludge in cooling system

HOAT, yellow/gold, allowed both types to be mixed, no sludge, often called "Lifetime" coolant, but 7 years would be car makers "lifetime", lol
HOAT came in to general use in mid-2000's
You can top up HOAT with Green or Red
And you can top up Green or Red with HOAT

If you are changing Coolant type, then drain old coolant, refill wth water(not in winter, lol), drive for a few days, drain water and refill with your choice of coolant, there won't be enough old coolant left to matter
