'04 Ranger - No drive or overdrive

I have a 2004 Ranger, 2.3ltr, 2wd, automatic transmission. My wife got the truck stuck in a snow bank and tried rocking it back and forth between reverse and drive to get out. It didn't work and she had to have someone pull the truck out for her. Immediately after, the truck will now only drive in 2nd or 1st. When it shifts into drive it gives out a whining sound and does nothing. Is there an easier fix than either swapping out or rebuilding the transmission?

Have some one go up under the truck and take a look at the selector arm on the transmission, see if it moves when you shift it into drive. If it does, then your problem is in the transmission. luckily, rangers are plentiful, and you could probably find a good transmission for cheap at a junk yard.
