I drove it, it don't seem much better. However im a 2wd 5 speed, and hes an extended cab 4x4 automatic. pretty hard to screw up driving an auto. Like I said, I drove it and it didnt feel much better. Im sure the 4.0 is better, but like I said we have a big weight difference, Id love to drive a 4.0 manual with mysetup, 2wd, reg cab. My mom has an 02 explorer with the 4.0, it runs real good for how heavy it is.

Nope, 3.55 is the only way it comes with the 4.0.

hah well that makes more sense then

just from my experience(driving mine and driving friend's 4.0s) there is a huge difference in performance/power/etc and a very very small diff in mpg.

3.0 love... I love my truck. I did not buy it to go fast.. Its slow yes.. but its a 4x4 truck.. I pulled a big *** tree down with my truck in low range.. it will do w/e u want it to do for having 148hp.. I tow a twin all steel snowmobile trailer with my 400ex in my bed, a 700cc polaris quad and a 05 4x4 rancher on the trailer.. it pulls it good.. U know somethings there.. but the motor doesent seem to work too much, unless theres a decent hill then u will have to give it some 3rd gear.. I prolly would of opted for the 4.0 but I got a deal on my truck and im happy with it. Granted i have a 13sec mustang GT to drive if Im sick of the Ranger lol.. and yea.. My buddys dad has a 03 4.0 auto ranger .. And he gets 16-18mpg.. I get almost 23 in my ranger.. mostly city too!!

I get like 15-16mpg on average with usually shifts between 2500-3000 rpm (auto)... My truck stock had alot of pickup, however after modding it, it has alot more. I need to hurry up and get out of debt so I can get a bama too!

This thread looks like it's going in the right direction...the op seems to know how slow the 3.0 really is.

I'm not saying the 3.0 isn't good for anyone, it's just not good for most people. I have one, and I hate it. I floor the gas everywhere (around parking lots, pulling out of my driveway, on the highway) and it really doesn't do anything for acceleration or towing.
