4.0 or 2.3

man im lost on this one. i love my 2007 fx4 ranger but with gas prices going higher and no end to it im thinking of getting a xlt 4cyclinder 5-speed. 4.0 sohc suck with auto and im only getting 250 miles to a tank. about 14 15 mpg at best and i dont drive it hard. only has 2000 miles or less but i dont think it will get much better mileage down the road. i love the little 4 bangers for just daily driver back and forth stuff. the fx4 only comes out on weekends. i never really drive the darn thing. what to do??.

Jester983 05-07-2007 05:16 PM

Get the 4 banger.. I would if I had a 4.0... If you need 4wd check into generation 2 rangers (80s era) those had 4 bangers with 4 wheel drive i believe.. Not sure if youll get as great gas mileage as newer 4 bangers..

However, the new four banger rangers get something like 23 city and close to 27 or higher on the freeway from what ive heard and read.

my wife has a 97 honda. gets 25 mpg. i like trucks and always had one. if i do sell my ranger ill get another one but with a 4 banger. who knows????. my 88 mazda b2200 gets 22 mpg on city. 30 highway. but the A|C doesnt work. not good in 100 degree weather. maybe when gas gets up to 4 bucks a gallon ill make my move.

slodsm 05-07-2007 07:14 PM

You should be able to pick up a 92-95 civic VX/CX for less than 2500 bucks. The CX's knock down 30ish in the city and the VX's knock down high 30's.

Granted they won't get out of their own way BUT, it's nice to still fill your tank for 20 bucks and drive like 400 miles on it lol.

Machine090767 05-07-2007 08:23 PM

when you got your 2007 ranger, gas prices were over $2.50 so it's not like you bought it when gas was .99 or something like that. sure, gas is around $3.00 a gallon now, but i would keep the 4.0 and drive less. otherwise, i foresee you saying later on that your 2.3 has no power and how you miss your '07...(just my theory)

ranger guy2 05-08-2007 04:05 AM

yea hear ya. truck is nice for long drives down the shore. my wife loves being up in the air compared to her little honda. maybe ill bye a used 4 banger with air and sell my mazda. keep the fx4 for weekends and long drives. better mileage on highway. bought my truck in DEC of 06. just had to have it.

SouthernMudSlinger 05-08-2007 09:36 AM

My last truck was a big gas sucking v8 truck, and got about 11mpg, and was slow. At 3 bucks a gallon, it would cost close to $90 to fill up, and I wasn't making enough money to keep up with the cost of gas, (Im in school, and dont have alot of time to work), so I sold it and got a 4cyl ranger. Couldn't be happier with it. I get 22mpg with it locally with my big lead foot. Its a 5spd with 144k miles on the truck.

greygooseranger 05-08-2007 09:39 AM

^^^^ BTW mark, the truck looks great, especially for having 144k on it!

winks 05-08-2007 11:02 AM

My 4.0 Ranger is getting 19-21 mpg, and my fiance's Escort is getting about 28-30mpg. She's told me we could swap since I drive twice as far to work, but I just can't get into the little cars anymore. I hate not being able to see over anyone.

BigRed 05-08-2007 11:33 AM

It will probably end up costing you more to buy and insure a second car than it will save you on gas, at least it would have for me after I did the math. IMO stick with what you have now and get a discover gas card.

ranger guy2 05-08-2007 12:32 PM

yea i hear ya.

bryanjints 05-08-2007 03:26 PM

Trucks aren't supposed to get great gas mileage.

My opinion is if you are going to buy a truck you should understand that you are going to spend more on gas.

ranger guy2 05-08-2007 05:31 PM

i know trucks dont get great gas mileage. but what happens down the road when 4 bucks a gallon hits??.

Msl747 05-08-2007 06:14 PM

So your willing to take a huge hit on a brand new vehicle, for what? 10mpg? Do you realize how much driving you will have to do to recoup from the amount of money you will loose selling a brand new truck? I bet you will loose at least $2k, probably more. Now ask yourself how much gas that $2k could have bought you... If you commute alot, then drive your '88 or buy a cheap Honda, especally if the FX4 only comes out on weekends..

HarryTasker 05-08-2007 06:27 PM

How many miles a month do you drive? Are you thinking of buying a second vehicle as a commuter?

ranger guy2 05-08-2007 07:35 PM

i use the mazda for my daily driver. only thing is the A|C doesnt work. summer is coming and its going to be hot. ill use the fx4 a lot more in the summer if i dont buy another truck or car. i use my work van most of the day and then i get into the mazda for going to the gym etc!!!. weekends the ranger comes alive.

So I don't why your wanting to get rid of the FX4? Why not fix the A/C on the Mazda or pick up another cheap car for a DD?

Thanks

ranger guy2 05-09-2007 04:05 AM

yea i might do that. only thing is i dont know if its worth putting money in that thing. cheaper then buying something else i quess??.

Gearhead61 05-09-2007 04:23 AM

If you save $.50 a gallon, it'll take a lot of gallons to cover the cost of another truck before you start saving any money.

REUBER 05-09-2007 09:16 AM

Once again, its a great time to be a recruiter.....i get to drive around an 04-06 Dodge Stratus SXT granted it has a huge GO ARMY sticker....but free gas and no miles on my truck...who i cant believe is about to touch the 58k mark
