4.0L performance

All I want to know is if it will be worht it to put a set of headers and an e-fan in my truck when I install my new engine? I am in the process of putting in another 4.0L and am looking for ways to get a little more power out of it while I have the engine on a stand
thanks

i say definitely do the efan, if it's a sohc then i'd probably do a udp instead of headers

04blackedge Jul 12, 2010 12:05 PM

Agreed, I'd go pullies over headers as well.

Does the efan and pullIes make much of a difference? Whats the best place to buy both? I always wanted a efan but others have talked me out of it saying it is a waste.

People swear by the efan. They've proven clutch fans do use a good chunk of the engines power, so getting that strain off the engine IMO is totally worth it

I've never seen numbers with pullies, but I think they do make a difference

I have heard another 4.0L ranger with the same exhaust setup as me with headers and it sounds better... But I don't know about the performance gain.

I have also heard on here that the underdrive pullies are not a real gain on the SOHC engines? And how would those pulleys affect my alternator, I just put on a 130amp alt so I dont want to lose any extra the new alternator will give me.

And I can't find much on how people have wired the e-fans without using a switch to turn it on?

you guys kill me with these efans, pullies and silly mods. Build a forged engine with big cams and high compression and be done with it.

rangerboy101 Jul 12, 2010 04:08 PM

Not everybody wants a high horsepower engine in their daily driver. We're just some people trying to get some extra power for a cheap cost.

05Level2 Jul 12, 2010 04:10 PM

Yea cause forged internals on a na motor gives mad hp increase.

No - it makes the engine stronger so things don't break as easy.

05Level2 Jul 12, 2010 07:41 PM

Whats going to break with a cam and higher compression?

How much power do you think pulleys and headers are gonna give a 4.0L engine? I could supercharge the damn thing and still not need to worry about forged internals unless I want a lot of boost.

Now back on topic... I want to hear from someone with headers and catback on their 4.0L ranger. How does headers and an electric fan affect the performance of these trucks?

Light weight pullies such as the crank pulley take less weight off the engine. i had a subaru and i did lightweight pullies stock was around 10lbs for the crank pully and the Perrin Lightweight pully was like 2 sumthing. it revved quicker. The efan also takes stress off the engine i'd run it off a temp sensor or a switch so its always on. headers increase the flow and add torque i have them on my truck

I would never install underdrive pullies myself. If you actually use the truck you are negatively affecting the cooling system, power steering and alternator. Well the a/c as well.
They will not increase horsepower to the engine, but they will decrease parasitic drag which may increase wheel horsepower slightly, and help the engine rev quicker, slightly. To me it isn't worth the decrease in reliability for a small gain.
Efans do basically the same thing. But most aftermarket kits and controllers are notoriously unreliable. And while they work fine under normal use, they often can't move as much air as the mechanical fan when you are at high rpm under a heavy load (hauling a trailer up a mountain).

A good tune will make a decent power increase, especially if you have an automatic trans.

I don't know if headers will make much difference on the engine, especially shorty headers.

I always wondered about the udp and throwing it off balance, im sure its all balanced together right?

Lightweight pullies would be nice but underdrive pullies are smaller than stock... That's what creates the problems.

I think I am going to do the headers and an e-fan and probably leave it at that. From what I have been able to find it's not worth it for me to buy a tuner because the truck is a stick... Am I wrong?

Great post, agreed!
