4 X 4 Low

I have a 2004 XLT 4 X 4. When I switch to 4 X 4 all is well. Light comes on in the dash. When I switch to 4 X 4 Low no light. ( sometimes I can get to come on )
Any ideas what I can do to fix it? I have never used 4 X 4 low but I want it to work.

In 2004 Ranger 4x4 you have to be stopped, you have to shift in to NEUTRAL, not Park if its an automatic trans, and your foot must be on the brake
Then it should shift to 4low

Neutral is the big thing that changed, used to be Park or Neutral
Speedometer at 0
Foot on the brake pedal, pushing down, i.e. brake lights are on
Trans in Neutral, if you have a manual trans then clutch pedal needs to be down all the way

If it doesn't shift reliably to 4low with above settings then could be the DTR sensor, digital transmission range sensor on automatics only
This is on the transmission drivers side, it tells the 4x4CM(control module) that transmission shifter is in Neutral, try shifting to Reverse then back to Neutral, or Drive and back to Neutral, if that seems to help then DTR sensor may need adjustment

Long shot could be shift motor itself(on transfer case), but would expect 4high and 2WD shifting to also be intermittent

Thanks RonD, I was not doing that.

Flip down the drivers side Visor, they usually have 4WD instructions there on Rangers with 4WD

Thanks again, RonD
