4W drive problem?

I have a 97 ranger xlt 4.0 Auto.
the 4h/4L light on the dash flashes 6 times then stops.
Cant seem to get it to change into 4w at all
Help

IIRC 6 flashes means the CM is bad

Is that the box in the kick panel at passenger side?
