i think GENERALLY a stick is a little better for offroading because of the usually lower first gear. it all depends though.

if you didnt get it stuck you werent wheeling hard enough...

I like a stick because if you do get stuck you can rock it back and forth easier, and it'll give you better control over what gear you're in. Lots of people will say that letting an auto worry about it is easier and if you get stuck just give it more go-pedal, but I like to take the harder route sometimes.

I like an auto for the easier control and ability to stop on hill sides/rocks without worrying about stalling. Really easy to use.

It used to be back int he day that sticks were considered the best. Nowadays tho, autos are gaining offroading popularity.

I like my auto because I'm lazy. The only time I ever want a stick is when I'm off roading.

i like a manual for alot of different things while driving. but when it comes to wheeling i think it is alot easier to do without a manual. and towing is alot easier with a auto as well.

Having a clutch makes wheeling WAY more challenging and enjoyable. Downshift for 4 wheel engine braking down steep hills, etc.

Personally, I'd care more whether it has limited slip or a locker. Many 4wd DON'T have LS rears.

My truck is like a mountain goat in 4W lo, 1st and 2nd gear. I like to tackle stuff without touching the gas, just for the challenge.

I completely disagree about towing being better with the Automatic. I can pick a gear and stay in it as long as i want. Automatics tend to hunt around for a gear it likes when you press/ease up on the gas pedal. I don't like that.

in a ranger, try and tow with a manual compared to an auto. the clutch wont hold it. you have to take off just right.

i never have issues with gear hunting.

plus i can tow atleast 2k pounds more than you.

I'd choose manual over automatic but thats just me. Manual is just so much more fun to drive and you have so much more control of the shifts.

I like auto for wheelin cause I can still down shift to D-1 if needed and I dont have to worry as much about roll back after a stop(and yes Im proficient with a standard transmission on hills) on steep rutted out hills.

i would rather have the stick but auto is great because you can pay atention to the driving and less on the shifting.
