How much do you think it would cost to switch a 2wd 2001 XLT into a 4x4?

In the end, more than it's worth.
Trade it in or sell it outright and buy a factory 4x4.
Less money and less headaches. IMO

If you intend to lift the truck to fit large tires, then you could do a solid front axle conversion plus add the transfer case at a lower cost than purchasing a 4x4 and adding a lift. Other than cost, you would have the advantage of a stronger front axle, better articulation, and much more ground clearance than if you tried to duplicate the OEM 4x4 Ranger suspension. If you're not intending to lift the truck and merely want 4x4 for when the weather gets bad, then it would be in your best interest to purchase a factory 4x4.

converting it to 4x4 with factory parts is gunna be $$ unless u can find a donor truck.

best bet is to find a wrecked jeep cherokee with a solid axle and swap it over. grab the transfer case from a ranger with manual 4x4 and driveshaft...

And you have an xlt so it is not designed to be a 4x4. So unless you were going with a SAS you would be in for alot of work. My susgestion is that you trade it in if you want to go that route. Another thing is that there was a study done a couple years back and it found that a 2wd, with a locker and momentum, can go 85% of the places most stock 4x4s can go. But it is your choice.

lol, yea, i mean, i was just checking it out, i think that in a couple years ill get another Ranger 4x4 or F-150 4x4, but right now, my truck will do fine, ill just have someone pull me out when i get stuck in the mud or something, lol.

Well that is why there was that 85%. It is given they are not as capable but they are pretty darn good for what you have to work with.

New truck or keep the XLT
 
i plan on doing the same conversion.... the only problem i think i would have with me being a 92 stx is finding out were to mount the t case and haveing the space for the front driveshaft.... but other than that i want a d44 up front solid axle from an early bronco and also do something with my rear... but im sure im wrong and i would apreciate if someone could tell me what other stuff would be hard to do.... and im sorry for hijacking your thread.... lol

In addition to the powertrain differences, a 2WD XLT and a 4WD XLT have a different frame and completely different front suspension. Converting one to the other would be impractical.
