I put a 5.0 in my 96. Gas mileage would depend on the setup you go with...which I wasnt going for gas mileage..I wanted something fun and fast..but I actually logged 23 Mpg when I took it easy just to check out the gas mileage. But I generally get about 12-17 Mpg cause I like to drive it like I stole it!

You need to swap the transmission with the engine. Your current 2.3L trans will not bolt up to a 302, and even if you could it wouldn't last. What type of racing do you plan to do? As for the rear-end that preference, if you have a 2.3 there is a good chance you have a 7.5" rear diff, which will last for a while but upgrading to an 8.8 is normally suggested. You could put the F150's axle under the ranger but it will be wider that your current axle.
