502 swap transmission help
I have a 2004 4.0l automatic ranger that I am looking into putting an explorer 5.0 into, the truck has 191000 miles and I know the trans is starting to be on its way out. Summer is coming up and this is the time that, if I do it, I have to do it. From everything I read the 502 has way too much power for a stock ranger trans, so what transmission should I get? If I go through with this I’d keep the truck through college, so I would probably get a rebuilt trans to put in so that I could have a warranty on it for a little while. Any help appreciated 👍

No Ranger transmission can bolt to the 5.0l V8 so not an option in any case
Transmission bolt patterns are specific to the engine bolt pattern. 5.0l Uses Windsor small block bolt pattern If you have a 2WD Ranger then you will also need a 2WD transmission with a Windsor bolt pattern 2004 Ranger would also need a new instrument cluster for this swap, plus new fuse panel, so probably not a good idea to use 2004-2011 Ranger for an engine swap 2003 and earlier Rangers used different system so better for swaps Google: Ford Ranger HEC, and Ranger SJB Just get a used 5R55E transmission, 2WD, or have your 5R55E rebuilt, then you can sell it and get older Ranger for the swap, or just keep driving it |
2wd, I should’ve specified but I forgot. So the 2004+ trucks are just not worth the pain in the ass that the swap would be??

Correct
It can be done but you would have to swap in pretty much all the cab wiring and electrics from an older Ranger into the 2004, plus all the engine wiring, so as a practical swap it just doesn't make "cents" |

No, just replacing the stock engine is as easy as it would get
In the mid-2000's many auto makers started switching over to CAN Bus systems, not exactly but close enough This system is like your home network but no router and just needs 2 wires There can be up to 50 "modules" in a simple car, over 70 as they get more complicated, lol These all don't need to "talk" to each other but many do need to "talk" with a few others, so just looping the 2 wire bus around to all the modules allows that, they can all send out "data" on the 2 wires and the modules that need it can grab the "data" the ones that don't ignore that "data" Its actually LESS wiring to do this, so cheaper But...............it adds a layer of difficulty when swapping in new parts that were not in that model vehicle, like a V8 engine and its computer And tracking down a problem can be difficult because Ford manuals will be no help, there is no section on non-standard modules, lol |
