My dealer sold me a 2011 which was 750 miles out of town. I signed - paid - shook hands - contract - the whole deal.

Today he tells me it was sold to someone else...and there are no more. (Here's your deposit back)



Are they easy to find in the US? What is a website that will let me search for one (pref. in NY) please?

 

I wouldn't think they could sell it if they already sold it to you. If you signed the paperwork and everything then the VIn is yours. Fight it and make them make it right.

I agree, but apparently they do not. I am told that the source dealership is "an independent", and that therefore he is not obligated to fulfill his end of the arrangement. (I use the word "arrangement" because my local dealer tells me that the contract I have is with him, not wth the source dealer) So...evidently he (the source dealer) can sell it if he wants, and my dealer can't do a thing about it. And the contract did not include a VIN, but otherwise it was complete, and money paid.

< sigh > Naturally I am fighting it, and tomorrow the dealer principal will become involved, and perhaps he will be able to save this deal. Meanwhile I have spilled my guts to the FoMoCo Customer Service Center. Maybe between them & the dealer prinicipal they can work something out.

And while these people talk, I'd like to see if I can find one fairly close by (but in the US) and perhaps if they strike out here in Canada...I can wave my findings under their nose(s).

If indeed my dealer claims that there are absolutely none left in Canada -- and there is at least ONE available just across the border -- then I would like to investigate sourcing that one rather than getting no Ranger, yes.

 

Can you buy a new vehicle across the border? Just wondering... I've been looking at bringing an older car across and many have mentioned that there are certain laws against buying brand new ones.

Yes - there is a simple procedure that requires you to take your bought-in-the-US (new or used) vehicle to an approved facility (CTC) and have them verify that it is equipped with DRL's and a child safety strap hook behind the seat. (There may be one additional check, but it's some tiny thing) And that's it.

But if I end up going that route, it is my hope that the Cdn dealer would do the paperwork thru the FoMoCo network...rather than me just turning up at a random dealership somewhere in NYS.

I understand this one for newer cars less than 15 years old, but I've heard certain vehicles there are laws against buying brand new to protect the dealerships here in Canada. Might be just people making stuff up, but heard about it on more than a couple sites.

 

Personally I probably wouldn't be interested in a Ford anymore lol. You are dealing with something I'd never expect from a company!

Maybe the dealer the Ranger was at sold it before the OP signed his set of papers? I'd say thats the most likely scenario.

You don't want to pay full price for a brand new Ranger anyway. Let someone else take the hit. Find yourself a nice used one with low miles. I picked mine up 2.5 years ago for 12,900 with 30k miles on it. Much better then paying 25k+ for a brand new one. Just my opinion though

 

$25k for a new 4 cylinder? Don't think so. Payed $16k for mine with 18 miles on it in december 2011.

 

the issue you're going to run into buying a ranger across the border is that we don't have day time running lights on our rangers. which is what you mentioned that needs to be checked for.

 

I almost wonder if thats just a relay or something that could be bought and plugged in? I'm sure someone can tell me otherwise.

 

Supposedly DRLs can be activated on any Ford vehicle. Any Ford dealer can do this.

 

So its just something that needs to be programmed on the computer or something?

 

DRL's can definitely be DE-activated on cars that are born with them; I and a zillion of my fellow Volvo C30 owners went thru that a few years ago. But whether they can be activated on a car that is delivered withOUT them I do not know. I would suspect that on vehicles made in the last decade or so yes - the capability is built in and can be enabled in the ECM.

I had many long and snarly chats with the dealer principal and a couple of the sales managers during Thurs aft and Friday (Aug 2 & 3) and I am pleased to announce that I am for sure getting a brand new black '11 Ranger equipped exactly the same as the first one.

Naturally I argued about the way it unfolded...and I was informed that:

"We did not have a contract with the possessing dealer; we had a contract with YOU."

And

"Other dealers are under no obligation to sell us a vehicle just because we want it. They can sell it themselves if they have a buyer...which is evidently what happened in this case. It is uncommon - usually a holding dealer will co-operate and let us have a car that we ask for, but there's nothing in writing"

Oh - and in response to my 'I-bet-you-wouldn't-let-me-casually-walk-away-from-a-signed-deal-if-I-changed-my-mind-but-instead-you'would-wave-the-contract-under-my-nose' comment, I was told that:

"Oh yes - we let people walk away from signed deals. We don't want customers to buy cars that they don't want.

Wow! I was surprised to hear THAT!

Anyway - they had to stretch their search about 800 miles, and will therefore be shipping my truck in (rather than driving it like they were gonna do with the last one) And I was informed that the shipping is gonna be about $1400, but they are going to eat that. (As well they should, IMO)

And the end cost is the same. So it looks good!

 

Kinda had a similar experience buying my '11 4 cylinder. I was basically looking for a 4 cylinder 5 speed manual everything -just a work truck-. I drove about an hour out to a dealer that had a few of the trucks I was looking for. Wouldn't even let me test drive it out of the lot -_-. So I came back to the dealer my folks used for their trucks which is MUCH closer, about 20 mins. I knew they didn't have any on the lot but they let me test drive an '11 4.0L 5 speed they had on the lot. Had too many bells and whistles for me, plus the price was pretty hefty for a 2wd 6 cylinder. The salesperson tried his hardest to convince me:

"we won't be able to find the truck your looking for in blue anywhere as they are mostly white and sold as fleet vehicles and most dealers won't give up what they have as they are discontinued"

I mean, they didn't even TRY to search out and find the truck I wanted. I had to tell them what dealer had my truck and it still took 15 mins of back and forth to convince the guy that i didn't want the 4.0L they had in stock. Finally he broke down and had my truck shipped here.

I don't believe that either. I threatened to walk away from the deal cause they wouldn't give me what I wanted in trade for my F150. Suddenly I had an extra $500 in my pocket and was driving my new truck home.

 

To drive off the lot with a new truck is cool.


To drive a new truck off the lot and its paid for is just the shit!

 

Well it wasn't exactly paid for, I still have a loan on it. My f150 tho, i had i think 16,700 ish left on the loan and I wanted It to be paid off in full so it didn't roll over into my new loan for the ranger. Had to fight to get that extra cash and ended up so that the extra they gave me took like $200 or so off the top of my ranger loan from the start.
