88 Ranger vs. 60 F150
 

Anybody know anything about F150's? The lot where I bought my Ranger had a 60 F150 at the same time, but it needed work so I went for the Ranger. Now they have done the bodywork and paint, fixed bumpers, did bedliner, are about to put on 4 new tires and align it. I could sell the Ranger and go for the F150, but am not sure which to do.

The Ranger may be a more practical truck, but the F150 just looks so cool with that big front end and that chrome! Suggestions welcome!

what motor does the F150 have?

A 1960 F-150? And you opted for a '80s Ranger instead? Shame on you!

That F-150 is BAD ASS in any condition!

Probably has the 352 or 390 FE big block engine. Maybe the 292 or 312 Y-block, or perhaps the old inline 6.

Well, the F150 needed work when I saw it, and the Ranger (supposedly) did not. They were the same price, but the F150 had rust. Significant rust along the roofline just above the window, you can see it in the pic below. So I got the Ranger instead. Now the dealer has decided to fix it all, bodywork done, paint done. They bead blasted the bed and bedliner'd it. They are going to put 4 new tires on it and align it. I do not know what engine it has (yet) or really what type of mechanical shape its in. Dealer says prior owner rebuilt everything, but I have not had it checked yet.

Now the question is, which truck to go with. The Ranger had to have an upper engine rebuilt (new cylinder heads, valves done, new radiator and new heat exchanger). Its in the shop today getting transmission fluid changed, as well as front & rear differential fluid. Will still need to replace the shocks (even if I don't lift it) and new wheel bearings. But its also a 4x4.

The F150 looks cool, that big front end and all that chrome. But is a 2 wheel drive. Cannot decide! Dealer will call me when the truck is ready and I can go drive it and check it out.

No contest, old owns new. Get that f150. Worst case, you make it 4wd later.

Depends what you want a truck for.

Do you need a daily driver, or do you want a unique, almost "antique", truck you can show off?

Do you need/want 4WD, and why should the F150 not having it be an issue?

Are you willing to put in the extra effort into maintaining the older F150?

Personally, I like the F150, but not as a daily driver - more as a showpiece; it's rarer, and looks terrific when in mint condition.

It's your money; it's your choice - just decide what you want out of your truck.

Also, make sure the rust on that f150 was fixed properly..

Actually, I am afraid it was not. Especially on the driver's side at the roof ... it's not as smooth there as I thought it should be, as if they just ground the rust until it was surface smoth, but still had some pitting, and then painted over it ... do you know what I mean?

Question: if they just painted over the rust, what will be the long term problem?

I am really going to have to drive it and see how it drives when they are done with it.

Okay, checked on the truck today. When they did the bodywork at the roofline on the driver's side, they just covered everything with bondo. Have no idea how much of the rust, if any, they took out. They put so much bondo on the top of the roof right there that the filled in the channel on that side ... the channel that runs along the top of the windshield like a raingutter? Completely filled in right above the corner.

Bad work.
