newb with some questions

Hello everyone, I just got a used 99 Ranger XLT with the 3.0. my question is I have a keyless entry and remote start that I want to install on it, but I do not know if if the truck already has keyless entry on it, it has powerlocks on the door? The truck came with no owners manual and no key fobs.
As for the remote start, do I need a bypass for the factory theft system or will I be ok without one? I have heard different things, some people say you need them for the 99 but others say you don't? Any advice would be great.
Thanks Rick

I don't believe that a 99 will have a factory theft system, but if I'm wrong and it does then yes you will need a bypass for it. It is like a $35 part. As for the remote locks, if your truck has power locks then you will just need to tap into the power lock motor. If it doesn't have power locks then you will need to buy actuators($20 per side I think). I am also in the process of doing this in my truck(07 Sport) but mine has factory keyless and an immobilizer. I'm getting the dealer to do the install($230 including the bypass kit and tax). It's not that I'm not competent to do this install(I'm and electrician) I just don't wanna f##k something up and have no warranty.. hope this helps a bit

How can I tell if it does have factory theft on it. It has a theft light on the dash that blinks when you start it. It already has power locks. If I knew a way to tell if it has keyless on it already it would save me some time and I could just get some factory key fobs.

My truck has the chipped key. I don't really know how to describe it other than it is larger than my other keys and plastic. Some help that is. I wonder if a dealer could run your VIN and tell you what the factory options on the truck were. Otherwise I think there is a module behind the dash somewhere. I don't know that much about the factory system though so I could be wrong. That theft light that flashes could just be a dummy, or your truck might have a factory alarm??

If there is a factory anti-theft system, there should be a small red light just to the right of the parking brake release handle.

99 rangers have PATS. im not 100% on whether or not it was a half year thing or not though, but my 99 has PATS and i needed a bypass kit for my remote start.

If you have a PATS key then you have PATS

It sounds like you do have what was the factory anti-theft system at that time (PATS)... as Jeff stated above if your keys look like the one pictured, and you have a blinking red theft light, I would bet it does. When I bought my '99 last year there was no "fob" or "keyless remote" with it, but it did have "pats" keys and the red "theft" light on the dash so I bought one from a place on eBay, and sure enough once you go through the program instructions it worked, so I ordered a second one as a spare. You can catch them on ebay quite a bit cheaper than at the dealer, just watch to make sure it states whether it is "new" or " good used" in the description... I wouldn't pay as much for a used one as sometimes the buttons are about worn out on them.

Thanks for all the replys, Maybe I will call a dealer tommorow and have them run my VIN. My keys are plastic like that but the opening at the top for the key ring is not off set, it goes all the way across the top of the key. Instead getting a bypass for the theft(if I have it)some one told me I could just tape a key to the inside of the plastic of the steering colum near the ignition and that would work, is that true? I know it's not the right way or the safest way of doing it, if it will work.

you have the theft system, no need to waste your time calling. Ive never heard of anyone doing that with the key, i would just spend the 20$ and get a real PATS bypass kit that will be alot more reliable

Thanks again for the replys. After I got home and looked at my keys they are indeed PATS keys. As for the keyless entry I found an unused fob from our Windstar and it works to lock and unlock the ranger But how can I unprogam the fob so the minivan will no longer reconize it, or have I already done so buy programing it for the ranger? Thanks again

It does...

I just checked on this for mine to possibly be installed in my 04 Ranger. The dealer said that 98 and newer usually has the factory anti theft system about 9 times out of 10 to be exact. Just take it to the dealer and let them install it for you. I do electrical work every day at Utility Trailer Manufacturing(18 wheelers) and I do know quite a bit about wiring diagrams and so forth. You've got alot of CPU's in your truck and one wrong cut or splice can pretty much ruin your day. Ford tends to get a little complicated when it comes to wiring as compared to General Motors. You mentioned the little key type light flashing in your dash. That's just to let you know that your anti theft system is active.
