96 ranger 3.0 4x4 to 4.0 conversion
96 ranger 3.0 4x4 to 4.0 conversion
I have a 3.0 4x4 that just does not have the power she used to. I have a 4.0(whole truck) sitting around that is the same year or 1 year apart but it is a two wheel drive My question is WHAT ALL do I have to swap in order to make this work. Will the 3.0 transfer case bolt up to 4.0 tailshaft, are these tailshafts interchangeable, do I need a 4.0 transfer case, anything like that. Any help would gladly be appreciated and thanks in advance!!!
You're gonna need a 4x4 transmission from a 4.0. You may be able to combine the 4x4 3.0 transmission with the 4x2 4.0 transmission (output shafts are different), but the 3.0 transmission will not physically fit the 4.0. So either you have to send off what you have to a transmission shop and they put the 4x4 stuff into the 4.0's transmission, or you have to source a 4.0 4x4 transmission.

Is their anything else I would need to get from a 4.0 4x4?

I don't believe so.

I assume both are Manual transmissions or both automatics?
So 4.0l 2wd computer will match the 4x4 drivetrain
Engine computer doesn't care about 2wd or 4x4 but it does care about manual or automatic transmissions
You can't convert automatics from/to 4wd without full rebuild, replace main shaft and tail shaft housing
Manuals can be converted with partial rebuild, replace tail shaft and housing
