98-00 Hubs

srry dunno which place to put this but i was curious if during the permantely locking of the front hubs on these years of the ranger if it was nessesary to remove the wheels, it doesn't seem like it to me but i'd rather not damage anything. anyone know for sure?

they lock themselves via vacuum when you engage the 4wd. However you should invest in a set of AVM manual lockouts to replace the vacuum system.

yes i know this i've been reading up thanks tho, my question was weather it was ok if i did the mod to the hubs to make the front end lock up like the new ones with a live axle without removing the wheels, just pop off the hubcap, pop off the dustcover thingy take out the metal pin thingy and put it back together with the wheels still on it and not jacked up. this is because my AVM hubs are on backorder and as of right now im getting stuck on retardly miniscule amounts of snow...so this is just gonna be a week or 2 of live axleing

Ok, so i did the mod....when i took off the passenger side hub piece everything was caked in mud, kinda curious how... but anyways i decided it must have been like this for awhile so i just put it back together like that and went for a drive up the street, i got around 20km/h when a had a large clunk on the front end... scared me , so i turned around and got around the same speed on the way back when it clunked again, seemed less large but still... anyway, im now off to get some brake clean and clean the thing real good... any more suggestions as to what the problem could be? remember it's been forever since this things had the whole front end moving... possibly low front end diff fluid? but when i finally got back i popped it into 4wd and it worked like a charm.... wierd

Is it still clunking? I've had my vacuum hubs modified for close to 4 years now with no problems. Sometimes they make a slight whining noise...I think it has something to do with the crappy vacuum system leaking air, but that's the only negative thing I've noticed.

Is your front differential open, L/S, or locked?

umm, stock? couldn't tell you, it's definately not locked though... and yes it hasn't clunked since that time i said above... and i've had it up and down through the gears as fast as 90kms/h and the 4wd still works like a charm. i think it must have been the front diff just workin it'self loose or sumtin, cuz it's been quite ahwile since both front hubs have been locked in

The only thing I can figure on the "clunking" was the individual hubs locking down after the modification. But that's all I can come up with.
